AMD Bags Silo AI in a Bid to Power Ahead in the AI Race
Global chipmaker AMD is making moves in the world of AI by acquiring the largest private AI lab in Europe, Silo AI.
Valued at roughly US$665m, the agreement between both companies represents a significant moment for AMD as it seeks to develop end-to-end solutions based on open standards.
The Silo AI team comprises world-leading AI scientists and engineers who boast extensive experience in developing tailored AI models. Likewise, its platforms and solutions assist leading businesses across cloud, embedded and endpoint computing markets. CEO and co-founder of the company, Peter Sarlin, will continue leading Silo AI as part of the AMD AI Group, reporting to AMD Senior Vice President Vamsi Boppana.
AMD’s acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2024.
Deploying AI at scale
Based in Helsinki, Finland, Silo AI holds operations across Europe and North America as it drives end-to-end AI solutions that help customers integrate AI quickly and easily into their products and operations. The company currently creates open source multilingual LLMs on AMD platforms, including Poro and Viking, in addition to its SiloGen model platform.
AMD’s acquisition comes at a time where enterprises are looking for fast and effective ways to develop and deploy AI solutions for their individual business needs. As a leading European AI company, Silo AI has been a great long-term partner for leading technology companies that are seeking to enhance their AI capabilities.
“At Silo AI, our mission from the start has been to build an AI flagship company. Today's announcement is a logical next step in that pursuit as we join forces with AMD to shape the future of AI computing,” says Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of Silo AI. “We have a well-established history of building successful AI products and delivering value to our customers.
“We look forward to becoming part of AMD to further scale our impact and develop enterprise solutions and AI models that address the most complex challenges with deploying AI at scale today.”
With Silo AI, AMD is aiming to improve its development and deployment of AMD-powered AI models and help potential customers build complex AI models with its chips.
The company has invested more than US$125m across a dozen AI companies in the last 12 months alone, having acquired the likes of Mipsology and Nod.ai to expand the AMD AI ecosystem. Its mission is to ultimately advance leadership AMD computing platforms.
“Silo AI’s team of trusted AI experts and proven experience developing leadership AI models and solutions, including state-of-the-art LLMs built on AMD platforms, will further accelerate our AI strategy and advance the build-out and rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers,” comments Vamsi Boppana, Senior Vice President of the AI Group at AMD.
Enhancing the next era of AMD’s enterprise AI
AMD continues to make significant strides in AI development, having committed itself to scalable solutions for a broad range of applications.
In 2023, the company launched its first AMD Ryzen 7040 Series processors with select models, including Ryzen AI Engine and Ryzen AI developer tools. The AI is designed to deliver unique experiences that were not previously available for laptops. Speaking at the time, AMD stated that the Ryzen processors would enable businesses to have more dedicated AI processing power.
AMD has been a leader in the global chip market, with its share prices increasing steadily over the past few months - an achievement that can be attributed to Chair and CEO Dr Lisa Su, who has led the company to becoming one of the fastest-growing semiconductor companies in the world.
The company has continued intensifying its global investments into AI technology. Notably, in April 2024, it announced a collaboration with BlackBerry designed to revolutionise next-generation robotic systems.
