Mobile internet specialist BIGO Technology has announced a SG$500,000 scholarship fund for undergraduate Data Science and AI talent at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Every year from 2020, the BIGO Excellence Scholarship, set to run in perpetuity, will fund two graduating students with $10,000 each.

In its press release, BIGO noted that it is keen to seek out talent from within the university, and it has committed to engaging students with practical sessions and internships with the potential for hiring such interns as permanent staff.

"Given the dynamic Singapore IT and AI landscape, we are anxious to groom and retain young talents for BIGO,” said Jason Hu, President at BIGO.

“As a tech company, we want to ensure that we will stay competitive in the AI field, this means we will be aggressively pursuing AI talents not just from universities but from the global pool as well. 

“By doing so, we are confident that we will be able to improve and upgrade the standard of AI experts in Singapore and move the standard of BIGO's AI to the next level."

BIGO aims to increase the number of technical hires from Singapore to 500 by the end of 2022.
