Sam’s vision and strategic direction have been instrumental in advancing AI technologies and their integration into various sectors.
Sam’s career journey
Sam’s early interest in technology was evident when he received his first computer, an Apple Macintosh, at the age of eight.
He pursued computer science at Stanford University but left in 2005 to co-found Loopt, a location-based social networking application. Despite raising over US$30mn in venture capital, Loopt was discontinued in 2012.
Sam then joined Y Combinator, a renowned startup accelerator, initially as a part-time partner in 2011 and later as its president from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in nurturing startups, contributing to a combined valuation exceeding US$6bn.
In 2015, Sam co-founded OpenAI with the mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. He transitioned to focus full-time as CEO of OpenAI in 2019, leading the organisation through significant milestones, including the development and deployment of advanced AI models.
Industry influence
Sam is recognised for his forward-thinking and collaborative leadership approach. He emphasises the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.
Under his guidance, OpenAI has achieved significant advancements, notably the release of ChatGPT, which has garnered widespread attention for its conversational capabilities.
In early 2025, Altman announced updates to ChatGPT, describing them as "pretty good" and hinting at more substantial improvements in the pipeline.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Sam has been a vocal advocate for the ethical and equitable advancement of AI. He has engaged with global leaders and policymakers to discuss AI's societal implications and the necessity for regulatory frameworks.
In May 2023, Sam testified before the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, emphasising the importance of oversight in AI development.
Sam has also highlighted the transformative potential of AI in empowering individuals and industries. He envisions AI as a tool to enhance human creativity and productivity, stating, "We're about to empower people more than ever before."
It's true that some jobs go away [because of AI] but we find so many new things to do and hopefully so many better things to do. I think what's gonna happen is this is just the next step in a long unfolding exponential curve of technological progress.
Vision for the future
Looking ahead, Sam is focused on advancing OpenAI's mission to develop artificial general intelligence that benefits all of humanity. He advocates for international collaboration and the establishment of safety standards to navigate the complexities of AI integration into society. Altman emphasises the need for a regulatory body akin to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee AI development and ensure its alignment with human values and safety.
