Tim’s career journey

Tim’s journey to the top of Apple began with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University in 1982, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Duke University in 1988. 

He spent 12 years at IBM, eventually becoming the Director of North American Fulfillment. After a brief tenure as Chief Operating Officer at Intelligent Electronics and Vice President for Corporate Materials at Compaq, Tim joined Apple in 1998 as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations. 

His adeptness at streamlining supply chains and improving operational efficiency was instrumental in Apple's resurgence during the early 2000s. In August 2011, following Steve Jobs' resignation, Tim was appointed CEO, marking the beginning of a new era for the company.

Industry influence

Tim’s leadership is characterised by a collaborative and inclusive approach, fostering a culture of openness and teamwork within Apple. 

He has shifted the company's focus towards sustainability, user privacy and accessibility, aligning Apple's business practices with broader social values. 

Under his guidance, Apple has introduced successful products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods. He has also made significant advancements in services like Apple Music, iCloud and the App Store.

Financially, Apple's market valuation has soared, reaching US$2.5tn in 2025, reflecting robust growth and investor confidence. 

Beyond product innovation, Tim has been a vocal advocate for user privacy, environmental responsibility and human rights. 

He has led Apple to commit to carbon neutrality across its entire business by 2030 and has emphasised the importance of protecting user data against unauthorised access.
