Mistral AI Works with TotalEnergies to Boost Renewables Tech

French multinational energy corporation TotalEnergies has embarked on a strategic collaboration with Paris-based AI startup Mistral AI.
This partnership is focused on integrating AI technologies across TotalEnergies’ operations, primarily targeting advancements in renewable energy initiatives and carbon emissions mitigation, aligning with the broader transformation goals of the energy giant.
To fulfil these objectives, they plan to establish a joint innovation lab staffed by a diverse team from both organisations, facilitating an environment geared towards technological development and sustainability.
TotalEnergies’ and Mistral AI’s targets together
Mistral AI brings its expertise in large language models (LLMs) and AI infrastructure to the table, complementing TotalEnergies' deep understanding of energy production — especially in renewable and low-carbon sectors.
The innovation lab will initially focus on three key applications to leverage AI technology effectively:
- Designing an assistant for its 1,000 researchers which will aid in new energy technology advancements and decreasing the environmental footprint
- Developing decision-support systems aimed at refining the efficiency of industrial assets while further reducing CO₂ emissions
- Implementing solutions designed to enhance customer experiences and facilitate energy consumption reductions for consumers
Mistral AI bringing Gen AI to the energy sector
Founded in 2023 by experts from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral AI has already secured substantial investment, positioning itself as a robust European competitor to American AI titans like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The partnership emerges as a response to European digital sovereignty concerns, exploring avenues for adopting European AI frameworks over dependence on American or Chinese technologies.
As part of this collaboration, both companies will be examining digital solutions specific to renewable energy production, alongside diverse industrial applications.
Historically, TotalEnergies has integrated AI primarily within earth sciences and predictive maintenance systems.
Its facilities — spanning oil, gas and renewable energy sectors — have utilised ML algorithms to identify and address equipment anomalies proactively.
Digital factory expanding AI applications beyond traditional uses
TotalEnergies’ Digital Factory, which marks its fifth anniversary this year, employs around 300 developers, data scientists and digital experts.
This team has formulated more than 100 AI-driven solutions, with 60 leveraging Machine Learning (ML) and Gen AI technologies.
AI now holds a pivotal role in strategising new opportunities for renewable energy development and consumer-oriented services, by helping clients optimize their energy usage patterns.
“We are delighted to work with Mistral AI, a leading French player in AI,” says Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
“This deal reflects our intention to contribute to the emergence of a technological ecosystem in Europe and will allow us to explore new opportunities to further embed AI into our activities.
“AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership was motivated by our pioneering spirit and ongoing search for innovation.”
Arthur Mensch, CEO at Mistral AI adds: “This partnership illustrates the positive impact Gen AI can have on a sector as strategic as that of TotalEnergies.
“By dedicating our AI solutions and experts to the R&D effort, the operational teams and, ultimately, the Company's customers, we are contributing to improved operations and the digital transition of this global energy giant.”
