VMware, which counts Dell Technologies as a major shareholder, has today announced that it plans to acquire Bitfusion.

Through the deal, VMware plans to use Bitfusion's technology to help businesses more effectively use AI technologies on-premises and in hybrid cloud environments. 

VMware plans to integrate Bitfusion into its vSphere platform.

Writing in a blog post, Alex Wang, Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development at VMware said he was “thrilled about the expected impact Bitfusion will have on helping our customers get the most out of the use of hardware acceleration technologies such as GPUs which power AI-based apps.”

“We view Bitfusion as offering for hardware acceleration what VMware first offered to the compute landscape several years back,” he added. 

“Upon the close of this acquisition, VMware will integrate Bitfusion into its vSphere platform—helping customers to efficiently share GPU resources powering their AI-enabled apps—on-premises and in the cloud.” 

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
