Lockheed Martin has announced that it will be using NEC’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) based System Invariant Analysis Technology (SIAT) in the aim of improving both its satellites and space travel.

SIAT’s advanced analytics engine, typically used in high-end computer systems and factories, uses data collected from sensors to learn specific behavioural systems that enable the system to automatically detect faults, in addition to recognising resolutions.

“The innovative SIAT developed by NEC can make valuable contributions to solving the challenges faced by Lockheed Martin in the space field,” said Tomoyasu Nishimura, Senior Vice President, NEC Corporation.

“Going forward, NEC aims to continue strengthening this solution and to globally support safety, security and operational efficiency in a wide variety of fields.”

The US-based giant that specialises in not only aerospace, but also military, defence, security and other advanced technology ventures will aim to utilise the AI tech to rapidly assess how changing space conditions and weather influence the performance of electronics.

“Lockheed Martin and NEC are experts in space and systems, and that's the right blend to explore how AI can improve space products for astronauts and people on the ground,” said Carl Marchetto, Vice President of New Ventures, Lockheed Martin Space.

“AI can revolutionize how we use information from space, both in orbit and on deep space missions, including crewed missions to Mars and beyond.”

The announcement from Lockheed Martin comes within the same week as NASA revealing that it will look to use AI within its own spacecraft in the aim of improving communications with Earth.
