American technology company NVIDIA has partnered with Alibaba and Huawei to help develop its idea for its smart city, Metropolis.
Metropolis applies deep learning to video streams for applications such as traffic control and public safety, with over one billion cameras designed to create the world's largest data source by 2020.
Currently, humans are only able to access a limited amount of that data in real time - most clips are stored on a hard drive for later usage, but utilising intelligent video analytics using deep learning in cameras could solve this problem.
AI-enabled analysis applications could then help with tasks such as law enforcement, whilst the edge-to-cloud platform could help monitor video instantaneously with accuracy and scalability.
Deepu Talla, vice president and general manager of the Tegra business at NVIDIA, commented: "Deep learning is enabling powerful intelligent video analytics that turns anonymized video into real-time valuable insights, enhancing safety and improving lives."

NVIDIA's Metropolis programme already has more than 50 partners, with industry leaders such as Avigilon, Hikvision and Dahua on board.
"The benefit of GPU deep learning is that data can be analyzed quickly and accurately to drive deeper insights," said Hikvision President, Shiliang Pu.
"The Metropolis platform can be applied to video streams to create smarter and safer applications for a variety of industries, from transportation to commercial."
