Samsung Electronics Co has announced that it plans to set up an artificial intelligence (AI) research centre, a new unit that will be established by a collaboration between its mobile and consumer electronics businesses.

Within the announcement made on its South Korean website, Samsung said it would also make some small changes to the structural organisation of the business.

Little detail was provided on the changes, however, Samsung did say the restructuring and development of its AI research facility were both efforts to “respond to rapidly changing industrial environments such as the confluence of various industrial areas and the merger of industries.”

Samsung has put significant emphasis on expanding its AI operations of late, having opened an AI lab in Canada last year, whilst also acquiring an AI platform developer known as Viv Labs for approximately $215mn.

Further, the firm hosted an AI forum in New York in September – an event that saw global technology experts gather to discuss both the potential of AI, and the latest industry developments.

In more recent news, the move follows Samsung’s appointment of a number of new managers in an attempt to revitalise the company’s leadership team.
