Adobe unveils new powerful visual generative AI tools
Multinational computer software company Adobe is fully embracing AI, and introducing three new generative AI models that enhance Illustrator and Adobe Express and notably improve Photoshop's text-to-image capabilities.
At the Adobe Max event, Adobe revealed Firefly Image 2, an enhanced version of the original Firefly AI image generator that empowers features like Photoshop's Generative Fill, in addition to two new Firefly models dedicated to producing vector images and design templates.
The new Firefly Image 2 model generates higher-quality images than its predecessor, particularly in terms of intricate details like foliage, skin texture, hair, hands, and facial features when rendering photorealistic humans. Images created using Firefly Image 2 are a higher resolution, vivid colours, and enhanced colour contrast.
AI is becoming increasingly realistic
Although an incredible development of technology, Adobe has additionally introduced a new feature called "Generative Match," which enables the adjustment of the generated content's style to match particular images.
Users have the option to choose from a preselected image list or upload their own reference images to replicate the style, controlling the resemblance with a slider. The final outputs will automatically include content credentials, essentially a digital "nutrition label" that attaches attribution metadata and identifies the image as AI-generated.
What protective measures are in place?
In a blog, Scott Belsky, Adobe’s lead designer, has confirmed: “We’ve developed new policies and safeguards to promote legitimate use of new features like Generative Match and discourage bad actors. First, we require users to confirm they have the right to use any work that they upload to Generative Match as a reference image.
“Second, if an image’s Content Credentials include tags indicating that the image shouldn’t be used as a style reference, users won’t be able to use it with Generative Match. We will be rolling out the ability to add these tags to assets as part of the Content Credentials framework within our flagship products.
“Third, when a reference image is used to generate an asset, we save a thumbnail of the image to help ensure that the use of Generative Match meets our terms of service. We also note that a reference image was used in the asset’s Content Credentials.”
As well as Firefly Image 2, Adobe unveiled a new Firefly Vector model for Adobe Illustrator, which the company claims is the “world’s first generative AI model for vector graphics.” Now available in the Firefly beta version, Adobe's Firefly Vector model allows users to create editable vector images through text prompts, automatically categorising each graphic element into "logical" groups and layers.
Finally, Adobe has unveiled Firefly Design models, which produce customisable templates suitable for print, social media posts, online advertising, videos, and more. Adobe's Firefly Design model uses text prompts to generate templates that are entirely editable and compatible with "all popular aspect ratios."
Over the last year, other organisations such as Canva and Microsoft have released a number of AI-powered creative tools, therefore, it's possible that Adobe's decision to open the floodgates to its own AI innovations is a strategic move to ensure the company's competitiveness in this evolving landscape.
