AWS Report: UK Businesses Adopt AI Every Minute

UK companies are embracing AI technologies at a rate of one business approximately every 60 seconds according to new research from Amazon Web Services (AWS), creating economic divisions between organisations with different adoption strategies.
The latest edition of the company’s “Unlocking the UK’s AI Potential” report, announced before AWS Summit London, identifies that 52% of UK businesses now utilise AI technologies, representing a 33% increase from the previous year. This accelerated adoption comes as Britain positions itself as a potential AI hub following the government’s £1bn (US$1.3bn) commitment to AI infrastructure announced in late 2023 and the establishment of the AI Safety Institute in Cambridge. The growth rate exceeds both the European average of 27% and the historical adoption rates of other transformative technologies such as mobile phones in the early 2000s.
Financial outcomes correlate with implementation, as 92% of businesses utilising AI reported revenue increases — up from 64% in 2023. This trend emerges despite ongoing economic challenges and continues to reshape competitive dynamics across multiple sectors from financial services to manufacturing.
AWS Economic Impact Report highlights widening gap between enterprises and startups
The research identifies a concerning divergence in how different types of organisations approach AI implementation. Large enterprises show increased adoption rates with 55% now consistently using the technology, up from 41% last year. However, these implementations remain predominantly surface-level, focusing on basic efficiency improvements rather than fundamental business transformation.
The report also found 59% of UK startups have adopted AI, with 36% developing new AI-driven products and services, compared to only 25% of large enterprises.
Strategic planning differences further highlight this division, with 31% of startups developing comprehensive AI strategies, while only 15% of large enterprises have comparable roadmaps.
Phil Le-Brun, Director of Enterprise Strategy at AWS, cautions about the implications of this division: “The UK is experiencing an AI revolution that is outpacing historical technology trends. The report reveals that at least one business is adopting AI every minute. While this is encouraging to see, it masks a deeper challenge. If we don’t address the key barriers to adoption in the UK – most notably digital skills – we risk the emergence of a two-tier AI economy.”
Digital skills shortage remains primary barrier to AWS AI implementation in business
The report identifies workforce capability gaps as the most significant obstacle to deeper AI adoption across British business. Over one-third (38%) of businesses cited access to digital skills as a barrier to AI implementation, an increase from 29% in the previous year's survey.
- EVERY 60 SECONDS: A UK business adopts AI technology, outpacing European average adoption rates by 6%
- SKILLS GAP WIDENS: 46% of businesses report insufficient digital skills directly impede operations, up from 32% last year
- STRATEGIC DIVIDE: While 31% of startups have comprehensive AI strategies, only 15% of large enterprises have developed comparable roadmaps
Nearly half (46%) reported that insufficient digital skills have directly impeded business operations, up from 32% previously.
The research suggests this skills deficit will become increasingly problematic, as businesses expect AI literacy requirements in 47% of new UK jobs within the next three years. However, only 27% of organisations felt adequately prepared to meet this demand.
Recruitment challenges compound the issue, with UK businesses reporting an average hiring timeline of 5.5 months to secure appropriately skilled employees. 41% of companies indicated persistent difficulties finding candidates with necessary digital capabilities.
To address these challenges, AWS advocates for coordinated action from policymakers and industry leaders. Their recommendations align with the UK AI Opportunities Action Plan, emphasising the need to empower businesses with resources and talent, scale AI implementation across public services, and ensure startups receive necessary funding to increase AI adoption.
AWS investment underscores long-term commitment to UK digital infrastructure development
The AWS report follows Amazon’s substantial investment in UK digital infrastructure. The company announced plans last September to invest £8bn (US$10.7bn) over five years (2024-2028) to build, operate and maintain data centres throughout the UK.
This investment forms part of Amazon’s long-term commitment to the UK market and is projected to contribute £14bn (US$18.7bn) to the country’s Gross Domestic Product through 2028, while supporting an average of more than 14,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually across local businesses.
“This could result in a longtail of businesses missing out on the transformative benefits of AI, which could, in turn, prevent the UK from fully realising the economic, productivity and competitive edge that AI can unlock,” says Phil.
