Will SAP's New AI Suite Transform Corporate Sustainability?

SAP, one of the world's leading B2B software companies, has unveiled a collection of new sustainability-focused products, with the aim of simplifying and expediting sustainability for businesses.
At Sapphire 2025, the latest edition of SAP's flagship conference which took place across several sites, the Germany-based tech powerhouse introduced a new suite of AI-enhanced ESG tools, carbon reporting technologies and a data platform designed for compliance and environmental oversight.
SAP's latest product portfolio is engineered for seamless compatibility with existing computing infrastructure that clients currently utilise, enabling them to advance their sustainability objectives efficiently and effectively.
These sustainability-focused initiatives form part of the company's comprehensive sustainability approach, with a primary objective of elevating sustainability data to the same importance level as financial and operational information within organisations.
Inside SAP's AI-enhanced compliance services
During Sapphire, SAP revealed that starting in August 2025, their new Business AI functionalities will become available in beta testing, spanning the company's diverse environmental, health and safety (EHS) and product compliance software solutions.
For SAP, automated processes will serve as a fundamental component of corporate sustainability moving forward.
The company's AI-enhanced permit management functionality within SAP S/4HANA for EHS environment management will streamline permit processing by identifying essential information from documents and recommending compliance action items, functioning as a personal assistant or consultant for sustainability professionals.
Elsewhere, users of Business AI will see some big upgrades to safety reporting capabilities.
If sustainability is not part of the current AI conversation in your organisation, it risks getting left behind while strategy and budgets are open
Within the new product suite, Joule, SAP's AI assistant, will allow users to file incident reports via its conversational platform, which can speed up health and safety procedures considerably.
The AI-enhanced safety instruction creation tool will recommend suitable safety protocols based on risk evaluations and workplace hazard assessments.
Regarding product compliance, automated information extraction and organisation from declarations, certificates and safety documentation seeks to minimise manual processing mistakes.
These capabilities will be incorporated into SAP's new SCM premium offering, demonstrating the company's commitment to integrated business AI technologies.
How companies are using SAP's AI tools today
SAP's Business AI is currently being utilised by clients across multiple sustainability applications.
SAP's Sustainability Control Tower enables users to accelerate ESG report development by providing customisable templates, AI-generated content and data visualisations.
Additionally, SAP's Sustainability Footprint Management employs AI to streamline emission factor alignment by connecting products with lifecycle assessment database records using confidence ratings.
SAP Green Token serves as another illustration, featuring capabilities to automatically verify and process data from International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) supplier documentation, demonstrating to users the sustainability credentials of their business partners.
Essentially, AI technology can enhance sustainability efforts across numerous applications.
"If sustainability is not part of the current AI conversation in your organisation, it risks getting left behind while strategy and budgets are open," says Sophia Mendelsohn, CSO at SAP.
"Sustainability is emerging as one of the most impactful enterprise applications for AI."
Further launches scheduled for 2025
During the latter half of 2025, SAP will incorporate its Sustainability Control Tower as an Intelligent Application within the SAP Business Data Cloud platform.
This incorporation seeks to consolidate sustainability information with business operations through a unified platform for reliable reporting and organisation-wide strategic planning.
Chosen customers will gain access to technology previews prior to public release.
SAP also plans to launch structured emissions data offerings throughout the remainder of the year, encompassing air, water and wastewater information from SAP EHS Management and S/4HANA for product compliance purposes.
Organisations will also gain access to additional data collections from the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management solution when enrolled in the SAP Business Data Cloud service.
Will AI transform corporate sustainability going forward?
SAP's recent product reveals target what the company identifies as "the gap between strategy and execution".
"The changes we launched this week go well beyond technical updates," said Gunther Rothermel, Co-GM and Chief Product Officer at SAP Sustainability, after the new product launches at Sapphire.
"They represent a strategic shift: scaling sustainability within the core of business operations, powered by AI and applications."
Through its new product suite, SAP aims to transform sustainability data into what the company describes as "decision-grade data worthy of sitting alongside financial and operational metrics".
The effectiveness of these programmes will probably hinge on client adoption levels and the real-world performance of AI-supported compliance solutions, but currently, prospects appear promising for both SAP and its clientele.
