Chief AI Officers Steer Businesses Through the AI Revolution
As AI continues to transform nearly every industry, a new C-suite role has emerged - the Chief AI Officer (CAIO). The CAIO is responsible for overseeing an organisation's AI strategy, implementation and governance, reflecting the growing importance and complexity of AI for modern businesses.
Businesses today are bullish on using generative AI (Gen AI) to disrupt, but research suggests that many are underestimating the requirements, with only a small proportion of respondents to a study by MIT saying they believe they have the right level of technology and other attributes such as funding, culture and skills to support its rapid adoption.
The rise of the CAIO is a response to the increasing adoption and business impact of AI technologies. AI is being used for everything from automating business processes to powering intelligent decision-making systems. However, deploying AI successfully requires coordinating across departments, managing AI risks and ethics and aligning AI initiatives with broader business objectives.
According to data from Foundry, this transformation is already underway. Eleven percent of medium to large organisations already have a designated CAIO or equivalent in the role, and 21% of organisations are actively looking to hire one, joining leading tech companies such as Dell Technologies and SAP which have announced the appointment of CAIOs in recent months.
In February 2024, SAP appointed Dr Philipp Herzig in the newly-created role of CAIO, with him set to oversee a new business unit covering the entire value chain for SAP's Business AI offering, extending from product development and research through to customer implementation. “SAP’s increased focus on business AI marks the start of a completely new generation of enterprise innovation,” he said.
Meanwhile Dell’s CAIO, Jeff Boudreau, is charged with overseeing the company’s Centre for Innovation, with the team focusing on shaping Dell’s AI strategy and policies, creating meaningful AI partnerships and advocating for the advancement of secure and ethical AI and Gen AI technologies for the future. “We are laser focused on designing and delivering AI-powered solutions that help our customers transform the way they work and help them solve real problems.”
Chief AI Officers act as a bridge between the technical and business aspects of AI
Importantly, the CAIO also acts as the bridge between the technical and business aspects of AI. They need to understand the latest AI capabilities and trends, while also speaking the language of the boardroom to communicate AI's strategic value. And as AI becomes more ever-more pervasive, the CAIO role is proving essential for organisations that want to harness the full potential of the technology.
The emergence of the CAIO also reflects the growing demands and complexity of managing AI. Deploying AI at scale requires significant coordination, governance and risk management – more than most CIOs, CTOs, or other technology leaders can handle on their own. The CAIO provides the necessary focus and expertise to drive successful AI implementation.
Of course, the CAIO role is still relatively new, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Companies are experimenting with different reporting structures, responsibilities and titles, ranging from Chief Artificial Intelligence Officers to Senior Vice President of AI and – in the case of Salesforce and Microsoft – CEOs of AI-specific areas of the business. But the core mission remains the same – to ensure AI is strategically leveraged to drive business results.
As AI continues to reshape the business landscape, the Chief AI Officer is poised to become an indispensable member of the C-suite. The CAIO will play a pivotal role in guiding organisations through the AI revolution.
Gartner: Businesses should not rush to appoint a Chief AI Officer
As AI continues to evolve, the role of the CAIO will likely grow in complexity and importance. Future CAIOs may have to navigate more advanced AI technologies, such as generative AI, with potential applications and implications that are only beginning to be understood.
Businesses considering the appointment of a CAIO should weigh the strategic value of AI in their operations and future ambitions. The Chief AI Officer is not just a trend but a necessity in an age where AI's impact on business is profound and expanding.
According to a report by Gartner, AI is disruptive enough to warrant a dedicated owner, but that person probably doesn't need a C-suite title yet.
“Businesses should, as a result, focus on a value-driving business strategy infused with AI,” the report says.
While some enterprises may opt for a Chief AI Officer, Gartner explains that a “Head of AI” is enough for most to integrate AI into business strategy
“Too often, organisations have an AI technology roadmap masquerading as a strategy,” the report adds. “They fail to recognise that activities around AI and Gen AI are business, economic, social, ethical and technology decisions.”
According to Gartner, avoiding this mistake requires a holistic, integrated approach with clear leadership and governance. However, this does not mean that organisations should rush to appoint a chief AI officer. For most, a head of AI who is not at the C-suite level will be perfectly capable of managing the two key aspects of AI strategy execution: orchestration and multidisciplinary governance.
“Forget the job title, and focus on the value of AI,” says Frances Karamouzis, Gartner Distinguished VP Analyst. “What is most important is that organisations have a business strategy infused with AI, rather than an AI technology roadmap masquerading as a strategy.”
