Cloudflare: The Invisible Shield Protecting 20% of the Web
Cloudflare’s services, belief in an open internet, and commitment to innovation through R&D already see it protect 20% of the web, but it won’t stop there

Every day, as millions of people browse the internet, an invisible shield deflects over 209 billion cyber threats.

This digital fortress, maintained by Cloudflare - an internet infrastructure company providing services to improve website performance, security, and reliability - safeguards approximately 20% of all web traffic - a staggering volume that underscores the company's pivotal role in today's online ecosystem.

"We're built on an intelligent, secure, high-speed global network," explains Steve Bray, Cloudflare's Vice President for Australia and New Zealand. "We help businesses regain control of their technology and security environments by reducing complexity and improving visibility across their on-premises, public cloud, SaaS, and public internet domains."

Cloudflare as a company

Steve’s mission at Cloudflare focuses on a critical challenge facing modern organisations: the increasing complexity of securing dispersed networks and remote workers. "Maintaining visibility and control has never been more difficult," he notes. Cloudflare's solutions aim to simplify this landscape, offering a unified approach to security, performance, and network management.

This is all seamlessly facilitated by the company's vast reach, with data centres in over 320 cities in 120 countries. This infrastructure allows Cloudflare to deliver ultra-low latency - "approximately 50 millisecond latency to about 95% of the internet users in the world," states Steve.

Case in point for Cloudflare

But behind the numbers are real results. Cloudflare's partnering with Australian government office New South Wales Department of Customer Service, which faced challenges including lack of real-time visibility and inconsistent security policies across agencies, helped bring about actionable change.

Cloudflare's engagement focused on delivering capability that the Department could leverage to make it easier for 8 million citizens in New South Wales to access government services securely.

Services and capabilities

While Cloudflare is renowned for its Content Delivery Network (CDN), Steve emphasises that their offerings extend far beyond this. "The company addresses several key challenges in the digital landscape.”

First, they focus on dramatically improving performance, reducing website load times by up to 50%. Reliability is another crucial aspect, with Cloudflare ensuring uninterrupted service even during network issues. Cost reduction is achieved by minimising bandwidth costs through efficient content delivery.

Perhaps most importantly, Cloudflare excels in providing resiliency, defending against massive DDoS attacks to keep websites online even under severe threat, something that has become an increasing threat in today’s cyber landscape.

Looking beyond

Looking to the future, Steve outlines several key areas of focus for Cloudflare. Firstly, the company aims to strengthen its strategic partnerships and seek new alliances with technology providers, government agencies, and enterprises across various sectors.

This is because Cloudflare’s expansion of global reach remains a priority, with continuous efforts to increase the number of data centres in their network, especially in emerging markets.

Innovation is also a big thing. In 2023, 17% of Cloudfare’s revenue went on research and development. Steve echo’s this is still very much the heart of Cloudflare's strategy in 2024 too.

"Investing in R&D remains a top priority for us," Steve affirms. "We're committed to developing cutting-edge technologies and new features that address the evolving needs of our customers."

This commitment to innovation is paired with a focus on enhancing customer experience, with plans to introduce new tools and resources to help customers maximise the value of Cloudflare's solutions.

Finally, Cloudflare is dedicated to fostering a secure and open internet. As part of their mission, they continue to advocate for an accessible digital world, collaborating with industry leaders, policymakers, and the broader community to develop standards and practices that enhance internet security and reliability for everyone.

"Our ultimate goal," Steve concludes, "is to build a better, safer internet for businesses and individuals around the world."

As cyber threats evolve and internet usage continues to grow, Cloudflare's role in shaping a secure digital future becomes ever more crucial.

With its vast network, innovative solutions, and commitment to an open internet, the company stands at the forefront of the ongoing battle to make the web faster, more reliable, safer, and therefore more accessible, for all.
