How Google Web UI Underpins Temu’s Technical Architecture

Google’s Web UI primitives have formed the technical foundation for Temu’s rapid scaling operations, with the Chinese-owned e-commerce platform serving as a case study for enterprise-grade implementation of Google’s developer technologies at its annual I/O conference.
The platform, owned by PDD Holdings, has leveraged Google’s API frameworks to support high-volume transaction processing across international markets, and represents a different model in the competitive e-commerce landscape dominated by Amazon, Alibaba and traditional retailers moving online. Temu operates a marketplace connecting consumers directly with manufacturers, primarily in China, aimed at eliminating traditional retail intermediaries.
Since launching in September 2022, Temu has expanded operations to 90 markets, competing with established players including Amazon, eBay and regional e-commerce platforms. The rapid international expansion has required scalable technical architecture to manage diverse regulatory environments, payment systems and localisation requirements across different markets.
Temu achieves performance improvements through Google API integration
At Google I/O 2025, Paul Kinlan, Lead of Chrome Developer Relations, presented performance data demonstrating Temu’s successful implementation of Google’s MPA View Transitions API. The integration, he reported, has delivered a 10% increase in user session duration and a 15% growth in page views.
The e-commerce sector has seen increasing focus on page load speeds and user experience optimisation as conversion rate factors. Amazon has documented how millisecond improvements in page load times can impact revenue, making technical performance a competitive differentiator. According to Paul, Temu’s implementation of multiple Google APIs including Carousels, Popover, Anchor Positioning and Customizable Select has reduced CPU load by 10-15%, addressing infrastructure efficiency concerns common across high-traffic e-commerce platforms.
The performance improvements have enabled Temu to compete with established e-commerce platforms that have significant technical resources and infrastructure investments, highlighting how newer market entrants can leverage the cloud to accelerate technical development.
Google mobile technologies support Temu’s cross-platform strategy
Mobile commerce represents the majority of e-commerce transactions in many markets, with platforms requiring optimised mobile experiences to remain competitive. The platform has implemented optimisations for Google Pixel Fold and integrated Android’s dialog full-screen dim feature, demonstrating technical capabilities in emerging mobile form factors.
Cross-platform consistency, meanwhile, has become critical for e-commerce operations as consumers use multiple devices for shopping journeys. Temu’s technical implementation addresses the challenge of maintaining user experience quality across desktop, mobile and tablet interfaces while operating in markets with different mobile device adoption rates and network infrastructure capabilities.
- 10% - Increase in user session duration following MPA View Transitions API integration
- 15% - Growth in page views achieved through Google Web UI primitives implementation
- 10-15% - Reduction in CPU load delivered by comprehensive API adoption across platform
Temu’s technical architecture addresses infrastructure requirements for marketplace platforms operating at international scale. The platform manages seller onboarding systems, product catalogue management, and transaction processing across multiple currencies and payment methods.
The direct-from-manufacturer model requires integration with supply chain management systems, inventory tracking and logistics coordination across international shipping networks. These operational requirements demand technical infrastructure capable of handling complex business logic and data processing at scale.
The documented performance improvements from Google's Web UI primitives implementation provide evidence of how API frameworks impact operational metrics for enterprise e-commerce platforms. The 10% session duration increase and 15% page view growth represent measurable outcomes that justify development resources and infrastructure costs.
“Temu, the e-commerce company, has been setting the bar when it comes to applying these new primitives to their full potential,” says Paul. “The web is becoming more stylish and responsive every single day.”
