In New York City, a security technology firm is quietly transforming the landscape of access control systems. Grid Squared Systems, founded by Lon Bazelais in 2008, has weathered economic uncertainties and technological shifts to emerge as a leader in innovative security solutions.

Now celebrating its 15th anniversary, Grid Squared has carved out a niche in the competitive world of electronic security by offering a boutique, white-glove service that larger corporations often struggle to provide. 

“If a client needs something done, we’re organised, they can call us – we’re here to take care of it,” says Lon Bazelais, Founder and President of Grid Squared Systems. 

This personalised approach has proven particularly effective in New York, where clients demand swift, efficient service. “We’ve definitely got more of a white glove, boutique feel, and people respond to that,” Lon notes. 

Grid Squared: Embracing cloud 

Grid Squared’s success isn't just about customer service. The company has embraced technological advancements, particularly in cloud-based systems and artificial intelligence, to offer cutting-edge solutions to its clients.

“Cloud has really changed access control,” Lon explains. “It has made it easier for people to install, it's made it cheaper for people to install. It’s made it easier for people to manage as well.” 

This shift to cloud-based systems has allowed Grid Squared to offer more efficient services, with the ability to diagnose and often resolve issues remotely.

The integration of AI into these systems has further enhanced their capabilities. “Systems can detect anomalies and send alerts,” Lon says. “For example, it can answer questions like 'Why is this person coming in at noon every day when they used to come in at 8am every day?’” 

This level of intelligent monitoring extends to video surveillance as well, with AI-powered cameras capable of detecting safety violations or unusual crowd behaviours.

Perhaps one of the most significant innovations in Grid Squared's arsenal is the use of mobile credentials. 

This technology is rapidly replacing traditional plastic access cards, offering both convenience and enhanced security. “Mobile credentials is a real game changer,” Lon enthuses. “We can send credentials right to a phone now.”

Mobile credentials: Seamless and secure 

The adoption of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has made this process 

seamless. “Just like you go to the store and you pay for items on your phone, it’s the same thing for accessing your building or office suite,” Lon explains.

This shift to mobile credentials isn’t just about convenience; it also addresses significant security concerns. Traditional access cards can be easily lost or duplicated, creating potential vulnerabilities. Mobile credentials, on the other hand, benefit from the inherent security features of smartphones. 

"If you lose a physical access pass, someone could pick it up. And if they know where you work, they can get in," Lon points out. “Everybody’s got their phone in their hand, which has its own security features – passcodes and biometric facial identity. Making access via a mobile credential a safer more secure option.”

As Grid Squared looks to the future, Lon sees continued growth and innovation. The company’s diverse client base, spanning multiple industries, has helped it weather economic uncertainties, and it hopes to build on its strength for the future.
