Nvidia's AI technology improves therapist-client relationships and streamlines mental health services, addressing global healthcare disparities

During mental health week, Technology Magazine looks into what the technology industry is doing to assist the mental health sector.

Mental health has become a global priority, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that half of the world's population will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime.

However, the availability of mental health professionals varies significantly across countries, with a median of just 13 mental health workers per 100,000 people worldwide.

This disparity is even more pronounced between high-income and low-income nations, where the difference in access to mental health services can be more than 40-fold.

Yet as AI enters into the healthcare industry, from streamlining processes in hospitals to accelerating personalised treatments for genetic disorders, it has now elevated the therapy sector.

Therapyside, a Madrid-based startup and member of Nvidia's Inception programme for cutting-edge startups, is addressing the global mental health care gap by integrating AI tools into its online therapy platform.

How is Nvidia enhancing Therapyside's AI-driven approach?

Worldwide technology companies are developing innovative solutions to enhance the delivery of mental health care.

Therapyside is utilising Nvidia NIM inference microservice which are optimised containers for deploying AI models to create virtual assistants and notetakers, allowing therapists to focus more on their clients.

Nvidia’s AI performs provides several key functions:
  • Transcription: It converts speech to text using advanced speech recognition technology
  • Summarisation: It creates concise summaries of therapy sessions
  • Virtual assistance: An AI assistant named Maia helps therapists by answering questions and providing relevant information

Alessandro De Sario, founder and CEO of Therapyside, emphasises the importance of this technology, saying: "In a therapy setting, having a strong alliance between counsellor and client is everything.

“When a therapist can focus on the session without worrying about note-taking, they can reach that level of trust and connection much quicker."

The platform incorporates several AI models to enhance therapy sessions.

A speech recognition model transcribes conversations, while a large language model summarises the session into clinical notes.

This automation saves time for therapists, potentially enabling them to see more clients and work more efficiently

Additionally, Therapyside has developed a virtual assistant called Maia, which uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to answer therapists' questions based on session transcripts and summaries.

Enhancing therapist-client relationships

Therapyside currently works with approximately 1,000 licensed therapists in Europe, offering counselling in English, Italian and Spanish.

The company reports that over 500,000 therapy sessions have been conducted through its virtual platform to date.

The AI tools are currently available through a beta program, with therapists having the option to invite their clients to participate.

Initial feedback from participating therapists has been positive, with many reporting improved focus during sessions and better recall of client details.

One therapist in the beta program, Alejandro A., notes:

"It's incredibly helpful to have a personalised summary with a transcription that highlights the most important points from each session I have with my patients.
“I've been pleasantly surprised by its ability to identify the most significant areas to focus on with each patient."

The AI-powered Maia assistant also helps therapists quickly recall specific details about clients, such as the names of family members or the evolution of a client's challenges over time.

This capability enables therapists to ask more personalised questions and provide better support.

Technical implementation and future plans

Therapyside's AI pipeline runs on Nvidia GPUs (which are chips designed for fast graphics rendering and complex calculations) in a secure cloud environment and is built using Nvidia NIM, a set of microservices designed to accelerate AI deployment.

The system also uses Nvidia Riva NIM, which are GPU-accelerated speech AI microservices for conversational applications for accurate automatic speech recognition.

Therapyside additionally uses advanced AI tools from Meta and Nvidia to power Maia.

Looking ahead, Therapyside plans to further customise Maia with capabilities that support specific therapeutic methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

Finally, Therapyside is integrating Nvidia NeMo Guardrails, which is an open-source toolkit for securing AI chatbot interactions, to enhance the tools' safety and security.

Alessandro outlines the company's vision for the future, saying: "We've just opened the door. We want to make the tool much more powerful so it can handle administrative tasks like calendar management and patient follow-up, or remind therapists of topics they should cover in a given session."
