The NFL has selected NetApp for its expertise in enterprise data storage capabilities
NetApp will work with the NFL to develop cutting-edge, silo-free storage technology, allowing the league to manage the data to drive innovation

The National Football League (NFL) faces mounting data management challenges unlike those of any other sporting organisation. With billions of data points generated each game — from player tracking metrics and high-definition video to fan engagement statistics across multiple platforms — the league’s infrastructure requirements have expanded dramatically over the past decade.

The NFL now processes petabytes of information annually while confronting increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity threats and regulatory compliance demands. Legacy systems, siloed data repositories and the need for real-time analytics have created a complex technological landscape that threatens to impede innovation rather than enable it.

To tackle this challenge, the NFL has appointed NetApp as its Official Intelligent Data Infrastructure partner in a move to develop advanced storage technology for managing the organisation’s data assets.

The partnership will focus on creating silo-free storage solutions that enable the NFL to harness data for innovation purposes across its operations.

The NFL will leverage NetApp technology to elevate its data storage strategy

“The global partnership between the NFL and NetApp represents a shared commitment to leveraging intelligent data to drive transformative solutions for the league,” says Renie Anderson, EVP and Chief Revenue Officer at the NFL. “By combining our expertise with NetApp’s industry-leading intelligent data infrastructure, we can unlock new efficiencies that accelerate innovation within our game.”

NetApp to feature prominently in NFL international expansion efforts

The NFL counts more than 218 million fans in the United States and maintains a growing international presence in markets including Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, Spain and Australia.

As part of the new agreement, NetApp will participate in the NFL’s global expansion strategy, with activations planned across all 2025 International Games. The company will serve as the presenting sponsor for the 2025 NFL London Games and the inaugural regular season NFL game in Madrid.

According to Gary Brantley, Chief Information Officer at the NFL, the league has selected NetApp specifically for its expertise in enterprise data storage capabilities.

“Working with NetApp has helped us serve football fans worldwide by streamlining our technology operations and enabling us to be better custodians of our sport,” he says. “We strive to innovate and excel in everything we do and work with partners that share those values. Over the years we have worked together, NetApp has earned our trust that they can meet those high standards. With an intelligent data infrastructure powered by NetApp technology, we have a secure data storage strategy that can carry us into the future.”

NFL to implement NetApp security features for data protection

The partnership will see the NFL implement NetApp technology across its organisation to enhance data storage capabilities. The arrangement includes access to NetApp’s security features such as NetApp ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with AI and NetApp cyber vault solutions.

These technologies are designed to protect organisations from data loss and operational downtime by detecting potential threats and facilitating rapid data recovery, which helps reduce overall operational risk.

The NFL has previously utilised NetApp services, with the new agreement representing an expansion of their existing relationship.

“The NFL has been a long-standing customer of NetApp, and it is gratifying to see their interest in expanding our relationship,” comments Cesar Cernuda, President at NetApp. “By helping the NFL build an intelligent data infrastructure, we are elevating the sport for fans of football everywhere. Bringing intelligence to the league’s data storage allows them to modernise their infrastructure and gives them the tools they need to agilely adapt to the future.”
