Ericsson and SAP set S/4HANA Enterprise Migration Benchmark

Ericsson has completed a migration to SAP's S/4HANA platform in just 54 hours, establishing a new industry benchmark for large-scale system implementations while reducing project costs by 30%.
The Swedish telecommunications firm, which operates across more than 180 countries with 94,000 employees, opted for a phased implementation approach rather than rebuilding its systems.
- 54 hours: Total time required for Ericsson's migration to SAP S/4HANA, setting a new industry benchmark for large-scale implementations
- 30%: Reduction in project costs achieved through the phased implementation approach
- 180+ countries: Ericsson's global operational footprint covered by the SAP S/4HANA implementation
This strategy utilised downtime optimised conversion methodology from SAP, which reduced the time required to migrate and convert data to the new platform.
"We are now looking forward to further optimising and refining our processes," says Tobias Ralsgård, Head of Finance Digital Transformation at Ericsson.
The company implemented the transition sequentially using SAP standard tools instead of establishing a parallel environment, which contributed to the efficiency of the migration process and delivered the reported cost reduction.
Ericsson and SAP partnership enables real-time analytics capabilities
The partnership between the two technology companies extends beyond the recent implementation, with collaboration across technical innovation projects and direct system support in finance, supply chain, human resources and procurement.
The migration has provided Ericsson with access to contemporary business support tools and continuous system updates, positioning the company to use analytical capabilities that were not available through its legacy systems.
SAP S/4HANA, launched in 2015, provides real-time processing capabilities that traditional database architectures cannot match, enabling organisations to process transactions and analytics simultaneously.
For telecommunications companies operating in competitive global markets, this capability offers potential advantages in operational responsiveness and decision-making speed.
Following the implementation, Ericsson has initiated its next project phase focused on maximising the software's standard functionalities, beginning with the finance department, with completion targeted for the first quarter of 2026.
The implementation has freed Ericsson from the constraints of custom-built systems, enabling the company to evaluate and implement emerging technologies without being limited by compatibility issues with legacy infrastructure.
SAP S/4HANA provides Ericsson foundation for artificial intelligence applications
The platform now serves as the foundation for Ericsson's next stage of digital transformation, which will incorporate analytical tools powered by AI and machine learning algorithms.
The SAP S/4HANA platform's architecture supports the incorporation of technologies including AI, machine learning and IoT applications.
The goal is to establish a more standardised, AI-driven and automated financial environment.
For Ericsson, the implementation represents a technical upgrade and a strategic repositioning of its internal systems to support future business requirements in an industry characterised by technological change.
Telecommunications firms face pressure to modernise their back-office systems to support global operations. Ericsson has reported benefits following the migration, with the firm now focusing on AI capabilities to enhance its financial operations.
"The goal is to establish a more standardised, AI-driven and automated financial environment," says Tobias. "This includes utilising real-time data analysis and AI-driven insights directly within SAP software. Another key area of interest is automated compliance and fraud detection, where AI will help identify suspicious transactions and flag potential regulatory violations."
