Tech Mahindra & AWS transform telecom networks with Gen AI
Tech Mahindra & AWS use AI, Gen AI and ML to boost telecom networks, promising enhanced efficiency, reduced costs and improved service quality

As global connectivity demands continue to surge, telecom companies face mounting pressure to optimise their networks, reduce costs and improve service quality.

This challenge has sparked a wave of digital transformation initiatives, with AI emerging as a key enabler for next-generation network operations.

According to Valuates, the global AI in telecommunication market is projected to reach US$14.99bn by 2027 and this growth underscores the increasing importance of AI in addressing the complex challenges faced by the telecom industry, including network management, data analysis and operational costs.

In this context, Tech Mahindra has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop an AI-powered platform for telecom networks.

The collaboration aims to leverage Gen AI to transform network operations and management.

The multi-year agreement focuses on creating an Autonomous Networks Operations Platform (ANOP) designed for Communication Service Providers (CSPs) and enterprise customers.

This platform integrates AI, ML and Gen AI services from AWS to enable a shift from traditional on-premises network operations to a hybrid cloud-based, proactive model.

Tech Mahindra and AWS enhancing network efficiency

According to Tech Mahindra, the ANOP platform is expected to significantly improve network operations efficiency.

“The communications industry is at a pivotal junction of deploying disaggregated, virtualized and cloud-native RAN networks.”

The company claims it will enhance Network Operations Center (NOC) productivity by over 50%, reduce field visits by more than 15% and decrease the Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) for network incidents by over 30%.

The platform also aims to accelerate the implementation of network and service configurations, with projected improvements of over 30% in speed and efficiency.

These advancements are made possible through the integration of AWS services such as Amazon SageMaker, a tool for building and deploying machine learning models and Amazon Bedrock, which provides access to foundation models via a single API.

Additionally, AI-driven predictive analytics are helping telecoms provide better services by utilising data, sophisticated algorithms and machine learning techniques to predict future results based on historical data.

This enables operators to use data-driven insights to monitor the state of equipment and anticipate failures based on patterns, leading to more proactive maintenance and reduced downtime.

Industry impact and future outlook

The collaboration between Tech Mahindra and AWS comes at a critical time for the telecommunications industry.

As networks become increasingly complex and data-intensive, the need for intelligent, automated management systems has never been greater.

Head of Telco Industry Solutions at AWS, Robin Harwani

Robin Harwani, Head of Telco Industry Solutions at AWS, emphasises the potential impact of this partnership on network operators: "Through this effort, network operators can get generative AI-enabled actionable and just-in-time recommendations such as for NOC operations, field dispatch optimisation, as well as automated self-healing for preventive actions.

“This will make it easier for operators to more proactively manage and optimise network performance and reduce their operational expenditure".

Tech Mahindra is also testing and validating Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) functions on Amazon's EKS Anywhere platform.

This initiative aims to accelerate the cloudification of Radio Access Networks (RAN) at the edge, potentially bringing significant benefits to the wider industry.

The future of AI in telecommunications

As the telecommunications scene continues to evolve, partnerships like this between technology providers and cloud computing giants are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of network operations.

The integration of AI into telecom networks is expected to drive several key developments in the coming years.

Through ML algorithms, telecom companies will analyse vast amounts of data in real-time, identifying network bottlenecks and optimising systems and resources proactively.

Furthermore, predictive maintenance powered by AI will enable telecom operators to anticipate and prevent network failures, minimising downtime and enhancing user satisfaction.

The convergence of AI and edge computing is another area of focus, enabling real-time processing and analysis of data at the network edge.

This will reduce latency and enhance responsiveness in mobile applications and services, paving the way for more advanced 5G and IoT applications.

Manish Mangal, Chief Technology Officer, Telecom & Global Business Head, Network Services at Tech Mahindra, summarises: “The communications industry is at a pivotal junction of deploying disaggregated, virtualised and cloud-native RAN networks.

“Our collaboration with AWS empowers telcos to simplify operations, modernise networks and unlock revenue through advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning.”
