McDonaldâs Grows Cognizant Deal for Global AI Transformation

The restaurant industryâs race to modernise legacy technology systems has intensified as global chains grapple with changing consumer expectations and the need for more efficient operations. Traditional point-of-sale systems and manual processes are giving way to cloud computing, AI and integrated digital platforms that can manage everything from kitchen operations to staff scheduling.
McDonaldâs, the global restaurant chain with more than 40,000 locations worldwide, has announced that it has expanded its technology partnership with Cognizant, the US-based IT services provider, signaling a significant shift in how traditional food service companies are approaching digital transformation.
- 40,000+ - McDonald's global restaurant locations
- 100+ - Countries where McDonald's operates
- 95% - Proportion of McDonald's restaurants owned by independent franchisees
The multi-year agreement builds on an existing relationship that began in 2017, focusing on transforming McDonald’s legacy infrastructure into cloud-based systems that can support its increasingly complex global operations across more than 100 countries.
Cognizant’s enterprise AI deployment reshapes McDonald's operations
Under the renewed partnership, Cognizant will implement its proprietary artificial intelligence platforms, including Cognizant Neuro IT Operations – a system that monitors and manages IT infrastructure – across McDonald’s global technology estate. The technology consultancy will also deploy Skygrade, its cloud management platform that enables organisations to monitor application performance and improve system reliability.
“Cognizant brings deep expertise in global finance and people systems that enabled us to focus on our core mission of delivering delicious food and exceptional customer experiences,” says JT Scott, Vice President of Global Technology Enterprise Products and Platforms at McDonald’s.
Global systems transformation targets franchise network
The agreement encompasses several critical enterprise functions, including the systems that manage McDonald's franchisee relationships. These account for approximately 95% of the company's restaurant network. The technology deployment will also cover payroll processing and master data management - the practice of maintaining consistent records across multiple business systems.
The partnership marks an expansion of McDonald's technology infrastructure, as the company seeks to streamline operations across its vast network of independently owned restaurants.
Cognizant drives modernisation efforts across enterprise systems
Anup Prasad, Senior Vice President and Head of the Consumer Business Unit at Cognizant, says: “Our collaboration has enabled the transformation from a legacy enterprise to a modern cloud-based business, delivering exceptional value.”
The agreement will see Cognizant providing support for McDonald's Global Finance Systems and Human Capital Management platforms, which form the backbone of the company’s international operations. These systems handle critical functions including legal applications and employee management across the restaurant chain's global workforce.
Technology foundation built on cloud computing and AI
The partnership will leverage Cognizant's expertise in cloud computing and enterprise AI, and include Cognizant’s product expertise, digital engineering capabilities and quality assurance services.
This technological overhaul comes as the food service industry faces increasing pressure to modernise operations and improve efficiency through digital transformation. McDonald’s investment in cloud-based systems and AI represents a significant technology deployment in the restaurant sector.
The extended partnership will focus on improving system observability – the ability to measure a system's internal states by examining its outputs – and increasing operational agility across McDonald's global network. This includes the implementation of generative AI technologies, which can create new content or solutions based on existing data patterns.
Future focus on innovation and system reliability
The agreement emphasises both companies' commitment to leveraging emerging technologies while maintaining system reliability across McDonald's vast network of restaurants and support systems.
Anup adds: “The continuity of this partnership is a testament to our mutual commitment to leveraging technology and driving business success.”
“The next several years will undoubtedly bring exciting advancements as we continue working together to embrace new technologies and innovation,” says JT.
