SAP CEO Christian Klein Drives Cloud and AI Transformation
The enterprise resource planning (ERP) software market faces fundamental change as companies move their core business systems to cloud computing platforms: marking the largest transformation in business software since the client-server revolution of the 1990s.
SAP – which provides ERP software to 88% of the Fortune 500 companies – is central to this transformation. The German software company’s core product, S/4HANA, combines business planning, inventory management, manufacturing and financial systems in a single platform. Its transition from selling traditional on-premises software licenses to providing cloud-based services represents a significant shift in how companies buy and implement business software.
ERP systems form the operational backbone of most large organisations. These systems manage everything from procurement to payroll, making their replacement or upgrade a significant technical and operational challenge.
Christian Klein, Chief Executive Officer of SAP SE, is directing this fundamental change in the company’s direction. His strategy emphasises cloud adoption and AI integration, while managing the complex transition of SAP’s vast customer base from traditional ERP implementations to cloud-based services.
Christian, who recently secured a contract extension until 2028 with expanded responsibilities as chairman of the Executive Board, joined SAP in 1999 as a student intern. His path through the company included roles in support operations, services and financial control, providing exposure to SAP’s core business functions.
“Together, we have successfully driven our strategy, and it is a privilege to lead SAP on its journey to be the number one enterprise application and business AI company,” he says.
After completing his diploma in International Business Administration from the University of Cooperative Education in Mannheim, Christian’s trajectory at SAP encompassed strategic positions including Chief Financial Officer at SuccessFactors, a human capital management software provider acquired by SAP, before ascending to Chief Controlling Officer in 2014, Chief Operating Officer in 2016 and taking on the CEO position in 2020.
SAP pursues cloud-first transformation strategy
The RISE with SAP platform, launched under Christian’s leadership, aims to simplify customers’ migration from on-premises software to cloud computing infrastructure. This shift responds to market demand for flexible, scalable enterprise software delivered through cloud technology.
Professor Hasso Plattner, chairman of the Supervisory Board of SAP SE, endorsed Christian’s leadership: “Christian Klein has consistently driven SAP’s transformation to a cloud company. With the early extension of his contract and a further strengthening of his position, we are clearly underlining his important role in SAP’s ongoing transformation.”
SAP’s S/4HANA platform, the company’s flagship ERP software, remains central to Christian’s strategy, combining database technology with business applications to process company data, supporting organisations’ digital transformation initiatives.
Under Christian’s direction, SAP is expanding partnerships with cloud infrastructure providers to enhance service delivery. These collaborations aim to improve customer access to SAP’s enterprise applications through cloud platforms, responding to market demands for flexible deployment options.
Christian’s leadership emphasises technological innovation in AI, machine learning and the Internet of Things connectivity. These capabilities integrate with SAP’s core products to enhance business process automation and data analysis, supporting customers’ digital transformation initiatives.
Sustainability and business transformation
The company’s sustainability focus extends beyond environmental considerations to include supply chain resilience and business continuity planning. SAP’s software supports organisations in monitoring and improving their environmental impact through data analysis and process optimisation.
Christian’s tenure as CEO coincides with increased market competition in enterprise software. His strategic response focuses on accelerating product development and improving customer implementation experiences, while maintaining SAP’s position in ERP software.
Beyond his SAP responsibilities, Christian serves on the Supervisory Board of Adidas AG, the German sports equipment manufacturer, providing additional perspective on digital transformation in global enterprises.
"I look forward to continuing the strong cooperation with my SAP Executive Board colleagues as well as our employees, partners, customers and investors," Christian says.
