The UK's MoD has invested £50m in its AI and data analytics capabilities
Kainos has secured a £50m agreement to enhance the UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Data Analytics Platform, supporting Royal Navy, Army and RAF operations

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is accelerating its digital transformation programme with a £50 million (US$62.6m) investment in data analytics capabilities, as government departments seek to modernise legacy systems and implement machine learning technologies.

Defense organisations worldwide are grappling with increasing volumes of operational data from sources including battlefield sensors, logistics systems and personnel records. As a result, the MoD’s approach centres on consolidating these data streams into centralised platforms that enable cross-department analysis and reduce duplicate systems.

This strategy has now received fresh backing through a contract with digital technology company Kainos to develop and maintain the MoD’s cloud-based defence analytics system, expanding the firm's presence in the government technology sector.

The three-year agreement tasks Kainos – which provides IT services to public sector and enterprise clients – with evolving the Defence Data Analytics Platform (DDAP). The platform operates on AWS infrastructure and serves as a centralised data analytics solution for British military and defence operations.

Ministry of Defence expands DDAP capabilities

DDAP, launched by the MoD’s technology arm Defence Digital, functions as a secure environment where defence personnel can access and analyse data using standardised tools. The platform aims to reduce duplicate analytics projects across military branches while enabling data sharing between different defence departments.

Under the new contract, Kainos will take over platform management from the previous provider. The company will focus on integrating data sources from across the MoD’s operations, including the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, into a unified analytics environment.

An MoD spokesperson says: “The MoD already holds excellent analytical minds and capabilities across defence. The evolution of DDAP will encourage minds to further unite under one true enterprise system, to help meet the ambitions of the Data Strategy for Defence for standardised, assured and efficient data analytics, as well as accelerate the delivery of new technology capabilities including AI innovation.”

Platform development focuses on user adoption

The initiative forms part of Defence Digital’s implementation of the Data Strategy for Defence, which emphasises democratised data access across military organisations. DDAP’s architecture enables standardised approaches to data analysis, promoting interoperability between different defence departments.

A key focus of the platform is virtualisation technology, which allows multiple users to access and analyse data without creating duplicate copies. This approach reduces storage requirements and ensures consistency in analytics operations across the ministry.

Kainos engineers will work with Defence Digital to create specialised applications for specific military use cases. These applications will run on the DDAP infrastructure, providing targeted analytics capabilities to different branches of the armed forces.

Kainos builds on existing defence relationship

The contract builds on Kainos’s previous work with Defence Digital, where the company helped establish data teams to develop applications on the DDAP platform. These applications support specific use cases across different military branches.

The new agreement expands this remit, with Kainos staff working directly with defence personnel to identify analytics requirements. This feedback will inform the development of new platform capabilities designed to increase user adoption across the ministry.

Technology provider brings public sector expertise

The project represents a significant expansion of Kainos’s public sector portfolio. The company operates across three main business divisions: Digital Services, focusing on custom digital platforms for public and commercial sectors; Workday Services, providing implementation support for Workday’s enterprise software; and Workday Products, developing complementary software tools.

Key facts

The company’s product portfolio includes security and compliance tools such as Smart Test, Smart Audit, and Smart Shield. In October 2023, Kainos launched an Employee Document Management product for Workday systems, which is now used by more than 500 global customers.

Brendan Mooney, CEO at Kainos, says: “It is a great privilege to expand our partnership with the MoD to drive forward an evolution of how data analytics is used across UK defence. DDAP is a pioneering initiative which we will help to strengthen by introducing new approaches to data management, tooling and governance, and importantly by working closely with personnel across the MoD to understand their specific data needs.”
