Why Has Apple's iPhone Designer Jony Ive Moved to OpenAI?

AI systems now have the ability to see, reason and understand language, but users still interact with them using keyboards and touchscreens designed in a bygone era.
It's a strange juxtaposition between the cutting-edge and the obsolete, one that presents a unique challenge for technology companies aiming to pioneer AI-native hardware.
Despite the release of innovative products by leading tech firms, such as smartphones and Vision Pro headsets, the swift advancement in AI technology calls for novel hardware that can get the best of the product.
OpenAI, the mastermind behind ChatGPT, has recognised that there is an opportunity on this front.
As such, it has made a strategic acquisition of io, a forward-thinking hardware start-up founded by Sir Jony Ive who was the brains behind the designs of early iPhone and iPod models at Apple.
The success he had during his time as Chief Design Officer at Apple cannot be understated; he helped to revolutionise the tech industry.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is hoping that Jony is able to do the same for the new era of technology.
“I think we have the opportunity here to kind of completely re-imagine what it means to use a computer,” he says.
The risk and reward for OpenAI
The announcement of this merger reportedly resulted in a more than 2% drop in Apple shares, indicating investor apprehension regarding heightened competition in the tech giant’s hardware sector.
“AI is an incredible technology, but great tools require work at the intersection of technology, design and understanding people and the world,” Sam explains.
“No one can do this like Jony and his team; the amount of care they put into every aspect of the process is extraordinary.”
Jony brings more than 30 years of experience to this new venture. His journey, which involved launching his own enterprise, LoveForm, after leaving Apple in 2019, included collaborations with brands such as Airbnb and Moncler.
This collaboration signifies a venture into a new realm of AI-specific device interfaces, moving away from adapting existing hardware to AI functions.
The integration of unique talents
The joint statement from Jony and Sam reflects a shared vision for cultivating innovative products.
“Two years ago, Jony Ive and the creative collective LoveFrom, quietly began collaborating with Sam Altman and the team at OpenAI," the statement reads.
"The ideas seemed important and useful. They made everyone smile. They reminded us of a time when we celebrated human achievement, grateful for new tools that helped us learn, explore, and create.”
This collaboration led to the establishment of a new company focused on delivering cutting-edge AI products.
The integration of OpenAI’s resources with io involves a comprehensive alignment of hardware and software development teams, drawing experts from varied disciplines.
Jony will lead design efforts across OpenAI and io operations, marking the commencement of creating a “family of devices” with AI-centric functionality in mind.
Designing the next evolution of AI
This partnership aims to address fundamental limitations in AI development, particularly the reliance on outdated interfaces ill-suited for AI’s natural interactive capabilities like voice, gesture, and contextual awareness.
“I am reminded of a time, three decades ago, when I emigrated to America," Jony says, reflecting on his career.
"As a designer, I was drawn to the exhilarating and innocent optimism of Silicon Valley, to collaborate with people driven to create amazing products that elevate humanity.”
It's safe to say that his expertise in product design and manufacturing will complement OpenAI’s mission.
While companies such as Apple and Meta have proven that successfully integrated tech products are commercially viable, OpenAI differentiates itself by emphasising AI-native designs over modifying existing hardware categories.
With access to advanced language models and multimodal AI systems, this initiative represents a technologically advanced leap into next-generation device development.
"The values and vision of Sam and the teams at OpenAI and io are a rare inspiration," Jony says.
"I have a growing sense that everything I have learned over the last 30 years has led me to this moment.”
