MariaDB is an Espoo, Finland-based technology simplifying database complexity and allowing companies to operate in a single, unified location.

The company’s MariaDB Platform for enterprise supports transactional, analytical and hybrid workloads, alongside being scalable from data warehouses to fully distributed SQL.

Its cloud database is MariaDB SkySQL, operating on a SaaS model. The solution brings the MariaDB platform to the cloud, with fully customisable capabilities to match customers’ needs.

Customers include the likes of Deutsche Bank, Nasdaq, Red Hat, Verizon and Walgreens.

Having been founded in 2014, the company has raised over $123mn across 11 funding rounds. Its latest Series C round, announced earlier this month, saw the company raise $25mn from lead investor SmartFin Capital, alongside ServiceNow, OnCorps, Intel Capital, GP Bullhound and European Investment Bank.

In a press release, Michael Howard, CEO, MariaDB Corporation, said: “Expanding MariaDB SkySQL cloud operations is our key focus. There is an addressable and immediate market need with a growing number of companies who want to enable faster innovation and agility by adopting cloud technologies and shifting database management to DBaaS solution. The funding extension gives us an immediate infusion to scale SkySQL faster, while doubling our valuation in a streamlined fundraising process that sets a path for our next steps.”

The company said it would use the funding to extend the reach and support the development of its cloud database.

“MariaDB continues to exceed our expectations,” said Jürgen Ingels, founding partner, SmartFin Capital. “The company’s innovation in cloud database technology will help support the rapid growth in IT modernization that businesses large and small are pursuing to keep up with the world around us. We feel MariaDB is well-positioned to take a large share of the growing cloud database market as companies continue to push forward into the cloud. We are proud to invest more in MariaDB to continue their exceptional growth.”
