National Gas Wins Cloud Computing Award

Following its separation from National Grid in January 2023, National Gas executed one of the most complex IT separations in the UK energy sector.

Tasked with creating a fully independent technology estate without disrupting the gas supply to over 23 million homes and thousands of businesses, the company embraced a cloud-first transformation, placing cloud computing at the core of its future-ready digital infrastructure.

As a result, National Gas migrated legacy applications from on-premise environments to Google Cloud Platform, enabling greater flexibility and operational sustainability.

Its adoption of multi-cloud services ensured dynamic resource allocation and strategic resilience, while cloud-native hypervisors and Infrastructure as Code improved resource efficiency and cost predictability.

The business also embedded FinOps practices, achieving cost savings through continuous optimisation, including resource rightsizing and decommissioning idle environments.

To support operational agility, the company used dynamic balancing across hyperscalers and introduced tailored, cloud-based services with minimal user disruption.

Systematic, agile deployment enabled seamless data migration, including one petabyte of critical data, without loss or downtime.

This was underpinned by advanced cybersecurity, including Secure Access Service Edge networking, tamper-proof code execution and a new Splunk SIEM aligned with the Cyber Assessment Framework.

The cloud transformation allowed National Gas to establish a secure-by-design architecture, bolster its in-house capabilities with cybersecurity professionals and build reusable design patterns for ongoing scalability.

The programme concluded on time and within budget, establishing a benchmark in IT separations and equipping the company with a scalable, resilient cloud infrastructure capable of supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.
