Sundar’s career journey

Sundar’s journey to the helm of one of the world's most influential tech companies began with a strong educational foundation. 

He earned a Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, followed by a Master of Science in Material Sciences and Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. 

Joining Google in 2004, Sundar initially worked on the Google Toolbar and later led the development of Google Chrome, which has become the world's most widely used web browser. 

His success in these projects propelled him through the company's ranks, culminating in his appointment as CEO of Google in 2015 and later of Alphabet Inc. in 2019.

Sundar is known for his visionary yet humble leadership style, emphasising innovation, inclusivity and a user-first approach. 

He has steered Google towards significant investments in AI, considering it the most profound technological shift of our lifetimes. 

In 2025, Sundar announced a US$75bn investment in AI, underscoring its potential to enhance human creativity and productivity. 

Financially, under Pichai's leadership, Alphabet Inc. has seen substantial growth. As of February 2025, Alphabet's stock price stands at US$186.87, reflecting the company's robust performance in the tech industry.

Beyond corporate achievements, Sundar has been a vocal advocate for responsible AI development and accessibility. 

He emphasises the need to prevent an ‘AI divide’, ensuring equitable access to AI technologies across different sectors and communities. 

Sundar’s leadership has also been tested by emerging competitors and regulatory challenges. In 2025, he acknowledged unexpected competition from companies like TikTok and The Trade Desk, highlighting the dynamic nature of the technology industry.
