How Berkleeās Digital Transformation Fuels Music Creativity
At Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, the convergence of music and technology is driving a comprehensive audiovisual transformation that is redefining how students and faculty experience learning spaces.
“Berklee doesn't look at tech as a different thing to music,” says the college’s Director of Classroom and Conference Technology and former Berklee student Varun Nayyar. “Music and tech is completely integrated in this day and age and it'll only continue to grow.”
As Berklee’s mission centres on equipping students with knowledge that translates directly into professional situations, it means when graduates enter studios or production environments, they arrive with experience using current industry-standard tools. To ensure this, Berklee’s teaching environments are equipped with up-to-date industry-standard tools.
The intersection of music and tech at Berklee
Varun’s team specifically handles classroom technology infrastructure and, over the last three-and-a-half years, have implemented new technology in more than 300 spaces across the college – the sheer scale of which reflects Berklee’s commitment to maintaining industry-leading facilities.
From Varun’s seat, Berklee doesn't view technology as separate from music education. Instead, the two are completely integrated, preparing students for real-world professional environments where technical proficiency is essential.
“Music and tech are completely integrated in this day and age and it’ll only continue to grow,” Varun notes. “Technology means everything, from capturing yourself on camera to recording yourself. Berklee is huge on that. Every part of Berklee’s curriculum is based on technology – it's an integral part of what we do.”
Armed with a mission to equip students with knowledge that translates directly into professional situations Berklee’s philosophy stems from its own contemporary approach to music education. As students learn jazz theory and harmony, they’re also taught these principles across any musical style – meaning metal players, pop singers, classical musicians and even producers who use computers as their primary instrument have access to industry-leading tech-fuelled music education.
Varun’s experience as student-turned-staff embodies this integration, too. On returning to Berklee, Varun turned to supporting Music Technology Labs with a focus on audio hardware and software technology before his transition to classroom technology leadership, which positioned him to influence the institution’s technological direction. Having experienced Berklee as student, work-study employee, staff member and now director, he understands stakeholder needs across the organisation.
“What better way of being able to make technology decisions when you've actually seen the entire process from the bottom up?” Varun shares.
Creativity and technology design
For Varun, the transformation he oversees extends beyond basic functionality. His team’s objective involves understanding faculty and student use cases, then designing solutions that actively push creativity forward – distinguishing educational technology implementation from purely operational upgrades.
“After understanding the use cases of the students and the faculty, I have to design something that not just enables them to hold a class, but ensures their creativity can be pushed forward,” Varun explains. “Not only do I get to contribute via AV technology, but I also get to contribute, in my own way, to the creative side of things.”
From here, the challenge for Varun’s team at Berklee lies in balancing evolving technology with a rapidly changing music industry. Even just five years ago, the landscape was significantly different, with digital technology, automation and AI transforming production workflows and distribution. And, with Berklee students in need of spaces reflecting current industry practices, a room’s configuration has to support modern workflows, if not it fails to prepare students adequately.
“The music industry itself is evolving every day, influencing the way artists interact with it now,” he explains. “This means when I’m designing, developing and maintaining multiple spaces, I’m not just thinking about the technology. I’ve got to think about how the music industry is evolving and how we can make sure the technology stays up to date. We need to keep in touch with what's happening.”
Berklee’s comprehensive structural overhaul
Varun’s transformation of more than 200 spaces across Berklee’s sprawling campus has taken place over a three-and-a-half-year period, encompassing classrooms, conference spaces and specialised facilities such as rehearsal and performance facilities. Working alongside Logitech, Q-Sys and NEAT, Berklee has been able to implement specific conferencing and audiovisual solutions.
Swiss-American technology company Logitech is a prime example of a strong partner for Berklee, Varun explains, as its specialism in computer peripherals and conferencing solutions has facilitated Berklee’s technology transformation. As Varun shares, four or five years ago, setting up a conference room for six or seven people required heavily integrated technology with dedicated processors, microphones and complex infrastructure.
"Logitech has just revolutionised that by putting in simple solutions with high-quality audio and video,” he shares. “It’s amazing technology that’s super simple to install and doesn’t stop us from extending the rooms. There are even different solutions based on the size of our rooms. It’s been a pleasure working with them – their conferencing solutions have made things not only much simpler, but so much better.”
How remote management revolutionises operations at Berklee
Perhaps the most dramatic operational improvement stems from remote management capabilities. Before implementing these systems, Varunās team handled 400 to 500 support tickets daily ā a number theyāve managed to slash to between 50 and 100, with half representing long-term projects rather than immediate issues.
This AI-powered approach to maintenance is shaping how Berklee delivers its services and supports the collegeās digital experience, both for students and faculty.
āWe are doing preventative care rather than reactive care,ā Varun says. āThis has been transformational. We are using automations everywhere so, say if someone reports an issue, within seconds, we can act on it. But now, we can be pre-emptive ā meaning when issues arise, the technology tells us. This allows my team to know somethingās wrong before anyone even walks into the room. Itās completely changed things for us and itās a transformation we make the most of every day.ā
Now, as automation connects monitoring systems with ticketing platforms and communication tools, response times have decreased dramatically ā improving user experience while reducing support team workload. This operational transformation has allowed Berklee to maintain growing infrastructure with its existing staff resources. The efficiency gains have, as a result, enabled the team to focus on strategic initiatives rather than firefighting daily issues.
The technology also provides valuable data about usage patterns and equipment performance. This information informs future purchasing decisions and space design. Understanding how users interact with technology reveals opportunities for improvement.
Music and the AI questions
While remote management delivers immediate benefits, AI, Varun says, will be revolutionary. Although Berklee remains cautious about AI implementation ā carefully considering policy implications and security concerns ā the institution wants to understand data collection practices before deploying AI-powered tools. This, however, has not been a barrier to AI exploration.
āThere are so many data collecting opportunities out there,ā Varun shares. āWeāre looking into a lot of new things. There are lots of amazing things on the horizon that we canāt talk about just yet, but when it comes to the future, Berklee is absolutely open and walking towards it.ā
The collegeās approach balances enthusiasm for innovation with responsible implementation. For Varun, protecting student and faculty data remains paramount while exploring AIās creative and operational potential, but it also believes it should not replace the human elements of its operations, only enhance them.
When it comes to AI implementation and the music industry as a whole, Berkleeās position as an educational leader means its AI implementations will influence broader sector practices.
Looking forward 12 to 18 months, Berklee's technology roadmap includes continued conferencing solution upgrades and predictive maintenance powered by AI. This fits into the collegeās mission to upgrade multipurpose spaces unique to Berklee's mission. These large environments serve as classrooms, performance venues, dance studios and rehearsal spaces and require full audiovisual integration including music consoles and outboard gear ā complexity that demands careful planning to support diverse use cases.
Beyond expansion, standardisation is a priority for Varun. By working with its primary partners ā including Logitech ā Berklee is forming the foundation for creating consistent user experiences, meaning anyone entering any room intuitively understands how to operate the technology.
āIf someone walks into any room in college, we want them to immediately know how to use the tech in the space,ā Varun says. āThis is one of the next big missions for us, bringing a common experience at Berklee with technology, wherever you go.ā
