Alibaba Group is launching an English-language portal on its flagship online mall.

The move comes as Alibaba tries to entice more merchants from around the world to sell to consumers in China.

Alibaba Group, the largest e-commerce firm in China, aims to double the number of foreign brands on Tmall Global to 4,000 in three years, according to Yi Qian, deputy general manager of Tmall Global.

“Tmall Global’s mission is to connect high-quality international brands across the globe with Chinese consumers,” said Yi Qian.

We believe the launch of this English-language website will expedite the process for brands and merchants to introduce their products to Chinese consumers. The website will widen our reach to merchants, especially to those medium and small sized businesses around the world.”

Tmall Global is China’s largest cross-border online shopping platform; this week it announced that it plans to open foreign-language sites, including Spanish, Japanese and Korean platforms.

Last month, Alibaba projected that its annual revenue will surpass 500bn yuan (US$72.7bn) this financial year, in spite of a trade war between the US and China.

To fend off competitors like JD.com Inc. and Pinduoduo Inc., Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma hopes to generate more than half of the company’s revenue outside of China by 2025.
