Facebook executives, alongside New Mexico’s Govenor Susana Martinez, announced that the firm will be expanding its data centre operations in the Los Lunas area of New Mexico, something that will take its total investments in the project above $1bn.

“We’re thrilled to be expanding our presence in the State of New Mexico and the Village of Los Lunas, and we’re grateful to Governor Martinez for her ongoing support,” said Erin Egan, Facebook’s Vice President of US Public Policy. “We continue to find a strong pool of talent to build our data centre, and with this expansion, construction crews will be working on the site well into 2023.”

The expansion will see an additional four buildings and 1.8mn square feet added to the Los Lunas data centre, taking it to a total size of 2.8mn square feet across the entire campus that will now comprise of six buildings.

“This expansion is good news for New Mexico and I’m proud to continue building on our strong partnership with Facebook as they create jobs and grow their investment in our state,” said Governor Martinez. “This shows even more encouraging momentum, and we’ll continue using our powerful tools and reforms to compete for more jobs and investment.”

Facebook’s continual commitment to the data centre will provide a big boost to New Mexico as the region looks to diversify its economic operations.
