Industry influence

Arvind is recognised for his collaborative and forward-thinking leadership approach.

He has steered IBM towards embracing open-source technologies and fostering partnerships to drive innovation.

Under his guidance, IBM's AI initiatives have seen substantial growth, with the generative AI segment increasing by nearly US$2bn in a recent quarter, contributing to over US$5bn in revenue since its inception.

This focus on AI and cloud services has been instrumental in enhancing IBM's market position and financial performance.

Beyond corporate achievements, Arvind has been a vocal advocate for ethical AI development and the integration of AI into business processes.

In February 2025, he was honoured with the TIME100 AI Impact Award, recognising his contributions to advancing AI technologies.

During his acceptance speech, Arvind paid tribute to Claude Shannon, the father of information theory, highlighting the foundational work that continues to inspire modern technological advancements.

To me, you can look at someone else that's growing and highly desired by clients - you can either go compete with them, or you can add value to that partner with clients, and that is a better strategy to follow. If I look back at ourselves, massive successes with IBM has always been through partnering and integration.

Vision for the future

Looking ahead, Arvind envisions IBM playing a pivotal role in the democratisation of AI and quantum computing.

He emphasises the development of specialised AI models tailored to specific industry needs, challenging the trend of large, generalist AI models.

This strategy has already yielded positive results, with a 10% increase in bespoke AI software sales and a 12% rise in IBM's stock price. Arvind also anticipates significant breakthroughs in quantum computing by 2030, aiming to position IBM as a leader in this transformative field.
