Dr Lisa Su, CEO, AMD: Advancing AI and Semiconductor Success

Dr. Lisa Su, has been the driving force behind AMD since she became CEO in 2014.
Under her leadership, AMD has transformed into a formidable competitor in the semiconductor industry, challenging giants like Intel and Nvidia. Lisa’s strategic vision and emphasis on high-performance computing have revitalised the company's market position and financial health.
Lisa’s career journey
Lisa’s passion for engineering was evident early on. She earned her bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Her professional journey began at Texas Instruments in 1994, followed by a significant tenure at IBM, where she played a pivotal role in developing copper interconnects for semiconductor chips, enhancing their performance and efficiency.
In 2007, she joined Freescale Semiconductor as Chief Technology Officer before moving to AMD in 2012 as Senior Vice President and General Manager. By 2014, she ascended to the role of President and CEO, marking a new chapter in AMD's history.
Industry influence
Lisa has steered AMD towards focusing on core competencies in microprocessors and graphics technologies, leading to the development of the successful Ryzen and EPYC processor lines.
Her strategic decisions have not only diversified AMD's product portfolio but also increased its market share in key sectors.
Under her guidance, AMD's stock price experienced a remarkable surge, reflecting renewed investor confidence and market competitiveness.
Beyond corporate achievements, Lisa has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in the technology industry. She has received numerous accolades, including being named one of Forbes' World's Most Powerful Women.
Her leadership during AMD's acquisition of Xilinx for US$49bn in 2022 stands as one of the largest deals in the semiconductor industry, positioning AMD to better compete in markets like data centres and AI.
I think we’ll be surprised, five years from now, how much AI has come into every aspect of our lives, and what we're seeing today is just the very, very tip of the iceberg.
Vision for the future
Looking ahead, Lisa envisions AMD at the forefront of AI and high-performance computing. The company has heavily invested in AI, launching the MI300 series chips in December 2023, which quickly achieved US$1bn in sales.
AMD's new AI portfolio includes the Ryzen AI 300 series, Instinct MI325X accelerators and MI350 graphics processing units. Lisa believes AI will be transformative, predicting significant advancements in healthcare and other fields.
