National Gas Wins Project of the Year Award

Congratulations to National Gas, the winners of this year’s Project of the Year Award.
We've won the Project of the Year Award. It feels fantastic, we've worked so hard for so long to get this project turned around and its really nice to be recognised for all the hard work and the output that we actually managed to achieve.
In one of the UK energy sector’s most complex IT separation programmes, National Gas has successfully completed a transformative cloud-first technology carve-out from National Grid.
Beginning in January 2023, the project aimed to create a fully independent, secure and future-ready IT ecosystem for a newly formed company at the heart of Britain’s gas infrastructure.
With operations responsible for transmitting gas to 28 million homes and 30,000 industrial users, the project demanded zero disruption to critical national infrastructure.
National Gas implemented a cloud-native architecture using Google Cloud, Microsoft 365 and ServiceNow, while upgrading cybersecurity capabilities with a Splunk SIEM and aligning to the Cyber Assessment Framework.
The separation involved migrating nearly 300 cloud and on-premise systems — including SAP, CRM and asset management tools — to National Gas with no downtime or data loss.
Legacy systems dating back to the 1980s were replaced by cutting-edge platforms such as Maximo.
To deliver on time and budget, National Gas scaled its IT team of specialists, built a Security Maturity Curve, and orchestrated blended workstreams through a bespoke Separation Management Office.
Simultaneously, the business introduced operational enhancements like digital asset management, GIS separation and a refreshed SAP ecosystem for users — all while preparing for hydrogen integration and long-term net zero goals.
This high-stakes programme has left National Gas with a resilient and scalable digital infrastructure.
It is now one of the few operators of essential services to achieve Basic CAF compliance, setting a benchmark in both cloud transformation and energy sector innovation.

Scientific Games, SCiQ European Debut
In February 2025, Scientific Games launched its SCiQ lottery retail technology in Europe, debuting at an Asda store in Ashton-under-Lyne, UK.
Developed in partnership with Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, SCiQ transforms scratchcard retailing through automated inventory control, real-time sales tracking and tamper-proof dispensing units designed to improve security and efficiency.
The system incorporates a 27-inch digital display and touchscreen interface for store staff, enhancing usability and customer service.
It also enforces Allwyn’s scratchcard purchase limits to support responsible gaming.
This pilot phase aims to evaluate SCiQ’s impact on sales, inventory accuracy and customer engagement, with a potential broader rollout across the UK.
Scientific Games is a global lottery technology provider serving more than 150 lotteries across 50 countries.
The European debut of SCiQ demonstrates the company’s continued push to modernise the retail lottery experience through innovation and digital infrastructure.
atNorth, Data Centre Ecosystem
atNorth, a Nordic data centre provider, is redefining sustainable digital infrastructure with a model rooted in renewable energy, resource efficiency and community integration.
With operations in Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, the company builds and operates facilities designed to support high-performance computing while aligning with environmental priorities.
A core element of atNorth’s approach is heat reuse.
In Espoo, Finland, heat from its FIN02 data centre is redirected to warm a local retail store, reducing both emissions and energy costs.
In Iceland, the waste heat from computing operations supports greenhouse agriculture, helping reduce food imports and enhancing food security.
These innovations are part of a broader mission to integrate data centres into their local ecosystems, creating circular benefits for communities.
atNorth’s model showcases how high-density compute environments can coexist with sustainability, setting a benchmark for the next generation of climate-conscious digital infrastructure.
