What does Apple’s self-repair programme mean for consumers?

Apple recently announced a new programme called ‘Self Service Repair’, but what does that mean for consumers?

The tech giant Apple has recently announced Self Service Repair, a new programme that will allow customers to purchase repair kits directly from the company and fix their own devices without having to visit an Apple store.

The move comes as electronics manufacturers have been facing increasing pressure to ease restrictions on independent device repair shops or DIY repairs, a push known as the "right to repair" movement.

President Joe Biden passed an executive order in July that directed the Federal Trade Commission to issue rules requiring companies to allow DIY repairs. Regulators in the United Kingdom and Europe have also either already passed or are considering legislation to force device manufacturers to provide their customers with spare parts.

“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

What does it mean for consumers?

From early next year, Apple has said that people can use an online store to order parts and tools to mend its newer products, including the iPhone 12 and 13 and recent Mac computers. Customers who send in their broken parts to Apple will receive credit toward the purchase of a new part.

The programme will focus on the most common items that need fixing, such as screens, batteries and cameras, before expanding to other types of components.

The new store will offer more than 200 individual parts and tools, enabling customers to complete the most common repairs on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

According to Apple, Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. The company suggests that for the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.
