Vishal (Vish) Chhatralia is passionate about giving back. It’s a sentiment that has been nurtured throughout his career thanks to several mentors, including an early teacher, who spotted his enterprising spirit and drove him forward.
“I’ve been very lucky,” he reflects. “Having people support, challenge and inspire me since my time in school has taught me the power of leadership. It’s also taught me that success comes from a mixture of execution and driving progress, but also an ability to have empathy and motivate the people around you.”
Get this mix right, Vish says, and you achieve a valuable virtuous circle that’s as crucial in business as it is in life more broadly. “Leadership is all about how you empathise with people,” he notes. “The only reason I’m on this path is because of the mentors and help I’ve had along the way who genuinely took the time to listen and guide me.
“I’ll give you an example,” he adds. “When I joined my previous company, RS Components, on a graduate scheme I struggled for the first couple of years. One day I was talking to a Senior Vice President — someone who was hugely busy. He looked at me, closed his laptop and said ‘the emails can wait, let’s go get a coffee and I’ll help you out’. It may seem like a small gesture but it made a real difference. A big part of my role now is carrying that forward, paying the universe back and making mentorship and leadership my strength.”
Fortunately, it’s a sentiment that’s perfectly in tune with the vision and mission of DCC Technology, which Vish joined around five years ago. DCC Technology is a collection of specialist businesses that act as enablers between leading technology brands and the people and organisations that use their products. It provides innovative technologies that are a catalyst for progress, improve lives and the world we live in, and enhance outcomes and experiences for those that use them.
Vish holds the role of Group Chief Digital & Innovation Officer at the business, a position he says is centred around hands-on progress, strategy and execution. “My mandate is to capitalise on all the 2.0 opportunities around us,” he explains.
“That covers innovation, digital marketing, inclusion and pushing us forward across every front. I also sit in our North America Team— our biggest region— as Senior Vice President of Commercial and Marketing.”
The company, which connects leading brands with resellers and end users across three core areas of Pro Tech, Life Tech and Info Tech, is proudly people-centric. Its services are aimed at enhancing the lives of those that use them while, within the business, it strives to empower and enable its teams.
“We’re a group of incredibly innovative and talented people that sit directly between vendors and customers,” Vish notes. “That’s exciting for me from a leadership perspective. As a distributor we don’t make anything, so our success relies on our people. I really believe that, as a leader, if I can motivate, coach and develop our teams to be even 10% better, then the entire business improves the way we deliver for our customers.
“As a result of this approach, when I speak with people in the business they’re genuinely motivated about driving progress and innovation, as well as the kind of impact we can have on people. It’s an industry that you can’t help wanting to be a part of.”
