OpenAI’s ChatGPT suffers hours‑long global outage affecting millions of users globally, highlighting the growing risks of AI service reliability

ChatGPT from OpenAI was offline for several hours due to yet another outage, leaving millions of people worldwide staring at inactive screens instead of the AI replies they expected.

The disruption struck squarely during peak business hours, affecting users from London to Mumbai just as they were beginning their daily routines.

Problems appear to have begun around 4:00am EST, when complaints started pouring onto social media about ChatGPT refusing to respond to prompts.

Downdetector, which monitors service interruptions, logged more than 500 incident reports from India alone, along with more than 2,000 coming in from across the United States.

What fuelled the frustration this time was the way the outage manifested.

Users remained able to sign in and type messages, but nothing came back – no alerts, no error codes – just empty chat windows where quick answers are usually delivered.

According to OpenAI, the issue was caused by a frontend malfunction, meaning the responses themselves were being generated but were not displaying properly in web browsers.

This also accounts for why some people using the mobile apps reported normal performance, while the website stayed completely unresponsive.

How OpenAI restores ChatGPT’s service reliability

OpenAI confirmed the outage on its official status page, which at first blared a stark red alert before gradually softening to yellow as engineers worked to stabilise the system.

Roughly five hours later, after intermittent connectivity issues, the company announced all systems were ā€œfully operationalā€ again, adding that the situation was ā€œnow mitigated and we keep monitoring.ā€

The timing, however, hit Europe the hardest, disrupting morning schedules as workers tried to tackle emails, draft reports and polish presentations.

Students revising for exams also bore the impact, suddenly cut off from their AI study buddy, while companies that had integrated ChatGPT into daily processes scrambled for quick alternatives.

This isn’t OpenAI’s first outage, either.

In fact, the firm has weathered several in recent months, including a punishing 10-hour blackout back in June that left users idling through the better part of a workday.

The latest breakdown is reigniting debate over the risks of concentrating so much global productivity on a single AI platform.

Meanwhile, rivals such as Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude remained unaffected throughout, providing users with safe havens when ChatGPT couldn’t deliver.

The impact of AI infrastructure vulnerability

Suhaib Zaheer, Senior Vice President at DigitalOcean and General Manager at Cloudways, says: ā€œChatGPT’s outage this morning left millions unable to access the AI service they’ve come to rely on as part of their daily routine. Whether it’s drafting emails, writing content or tackling complex problems, ChatGPT is fundamental to how Brits work.

“Consumers are used to seamless digital experiences and expect the same reliability when accessing AI services like ChatGPT. These platforms must be built to handle technical failures and traffic surges, as any delays, glitches or prolonged outages will quickly cause frustration.”

He adds: “For businesses that have integrated AI tools into critical workflows, this outage is a reminder of how quickly productivity can grind to a halt when these services fail.

“As AI becomes more integrated into our daily workflows, service resilience isn’t just an upgrade but a fundamental necessity.”
