AWS' New Zealand Region Launch to Expand Cloud Capabilities

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, marking a substantial investment of more than NZ$7.5bn (US$4.4bn) to build and manage new data centres throughout New Zealand.
This strategic development allows New Zealand entities access to cutting-edge cloud infrastructure hosted locally, optimising for reduced latency and compliance with data residency regulations.
“The new AWS Region in New Zealand will help serve the growing demand for cloud services across the country and empower organisations of all sizes to accelerate their digital transformation,” says Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS.
“With this launch, businesses can now leverage advanced AWS technologies, from core cloud capabilities to artificial intelligence and machine learning, all while meeting local data residency requirements.
“By investing in New Zealand's digital infrastructure, we're proud to support the country's economic growth, foster innovation and help position it as a technology hub in the Asia Pacific region.”
A multi-billion-dollar investment
Amazon anticipates that the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region will contribute approximately NZ$10.8bn (US$6.3bn) to the country's GDP over time, alongside supporting more than 1,000 full-time jobs annually across various sectors, such as engineering, telecommunications and data centre operations.
The initiative highlights New Zealand’s expanding role as a pivotal digital centre within the Asia Pacific landscape.
The AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region features three distinct Availability Zones, each engineered with standalone power, cooling and physical security and interconnected by low-latency networks to enable resilient, high-availability operations.
This deployment brings AWS’ global footprint to a total of 120 Availability Zones across 38 Regions.
“This is a major milestone, not just in terms of size, but I think in what it represents,” says Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand.
“It's a vote of confidence in New Zealand as a place to do business, to innovate and to build for the long term. And this investment will supercharge growth and it is key to creating more jobs, lifting incomes and putting more money into the pockets of Kiwis.”
“The launch of the AWS Region in New Zealand is an exciting moment,” adds Graeme Muller, CEO of NZTech.
“This investment in digital infrastructure and Amazon’s commitment to digital skills can accelerate New Zealand technology businesses and help New Zealanders to move into highly skilled, secure and well-paid technology jobs – which exist right across the economy, from tech companies to various sectors including agriculture, finance, retail, professional services, government and many more.”
Energy efficiency and sustainability
Aligned with global sustainability goals, the AWS Region will operate completely on renewable energy from its inception, supported by a long-standing agreement with Mercury NZ for the Turitea South wind farm.
This forms part of Amazon’s global commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under The Climate Pledge.
Advanced technology implementations continue to enhance energy efficiency, with AWS infrastructure reported to be up to 4.1 times more efficient than conventional enterprise data centres, as estimated in an Accenture study, providing substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
Supporting cloud adoption and skills
Parallel to infrastructure development, AWS is amplifying its skills development programmes within New Zealand.
With initiatives such as AWS Academy and AWS Skill Builder training completed for more than 50,000 individuals, and a Memorandum of Understanding with the New Zealand government seeking to train 100,000 in total, a significant focus is placed on nurturing the local workforce for evolving technological roles.
Local organisations using AWS span multiple sectors, including finance, retail and media, demonstrating AWS’ broad-reaching influence in New Zealand’s digital transformation landscape.
Partners such as Accenture and Datacom further facilitate enterprise and government collaborations in digital transitions.
Building on a strong foundation for the region's digital future
This investment in New Zealand is part of AWS' broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity, augmenting existing infrastructure such as the AWS Direct Connect site and AWS Local Zone in Auckland.
This positions New Zealand as an essential node in the Asia Pacific’s digital network, promising accelerated technological innovations.
Through integrated infrastructure, renewable energy commitments and collaborations, AWS is setting the stage for New Zealand's heightened role as a hub for digital advancement within the Asia Pacific region.
