Located in the stunning karst landscape of China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Buhua Village has emerged as a compelling case study in how advanced connectivity infrastructure can transform rural communities.

The once-isolated settlement has evolved into a digitally-enabled hub, demonstrating the tangible economic impact of 5G deployment in challenging geographical environments.

Through a collaborative infrastructure project between China Mobile and Huawei, the village now generates more than CNY500,000 (US$70,000) in annual collective income, with individual residents seeing their per capita earnings increase by CNY18,000 (US$2,520).

Targeted tech innovation

The Chongzuo region, where Buhua Village is situated, presents significant technical challenges for network deployment. The area’s distinctive karst topography, characterised by dramatic peak clusters and forest formations, creates substantial obstacles for communications infrastructure.

However, the partnership between China Mobile and Huawei has addressed these geographical barriers through targeted technological innovation. The results could indicate the potential for rural connectivity in challenging terrain: all administrative villages in Chongzuo now have access to 5G networks, while 99% of natural villages have 4G coverage and 94% have 5G coverage.

“By bridging the digital divide, we are helping remote villages like Buhua develop digital trade alongside traditional agriculture,” explains Zhou Peng, General Manager of China Mobile Guangxi's Chongzuo Branch.

“This is transforming resources that were not fully used in the past due to geographical limitations into strong momentum for economic growth in the digital age.”

Enabling digital commerce infrastructure

Buhua Village“s network upgrade from 4G to 5G was completed in 2021, providing residents with digital services comparable to those available in major urban centres. This connectivity foundation has enabled the development of a digital e-commerce ecosystem in Xinhe Town, where the village is situated.

The initiative includes 65 product stores on platforms like JD.com and Douyin, collectively owned by the village, alongside a live-streaming incubation base that has developed 27 local content creators.

These digital storefronts generate over CN¥300,000 (US$42,000) in annual revenue through the sale of local specialities, including Buhua brown sugar. This handcrafted product – recognised as intangible cultural heritage – commands a 150% price premium over standard brown sugar and has reached tier-1 Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with exports extending to Japan and South Korea.

In 2025, average household income in Buhua Village reached more than CN¥80,000 (US$11,200) – three times the average income from traditional sugarcane farming, prompting young people to return to the village to develop their careers.

Transforming the tourism experience

The impact of digital infrastructure extends to Buhua Village’s tourism sector, where China Mobile has implemented an intelligent ticketing system at the Heishui River, the village’s primary scenic attraction.

The system has reduced average ticket purchase times from 20 minutes to three, with online transactions now representing 30% of total sales.

The platform also facilitates accommodation bookings, contributing to a 30% increase in local homestay reservation rates.

Tian Yongsheng, Deputy General Manager of Huawei Guangxi, adds: “Huawei is supporting China Mobile in building a solid digital foundation for Chongzuo with innovative solutions.

“We look forward to seeing technology overcome geographical limitations and enable more remote villages to achieve leapfrog development in the 5G and AI era.”

Deploying AI for ecological monitoring

Elsewhere, digital technologies are being applied to environmental protection initiatives in the region.

A safety monitoring and IT system project for modern irrigation engineering along the Heishui River has been launched with CN¥100m (US$14m) in investment. Supported by the Bianjiang Zhizhou Open AI platform, the digital monitoring system is designed to cover 13 towns across four counties and districts in Chongzuo. Once operational, the system aims to enable integrated, real-time monitoring of water quality and other ecological parameters.

The intelligent early warning capabilities are intended to support safe water irrigation across 60,000 hectares of farmland in the river basin. This digital infrastructure represents a significant step towards sustainable agricultural practices in the region.

Ultimately, the economic transformation led by China Mobile and Huawei serves to illustrate the broader potential of rural digitalisation strategies.
