Construction: How Meta’s $10bn Data Centre Powers AI Growth

Meta has appointed Turner Construction Company as one of the contractors for its US$10bn data centre campus in Lebanon, Indiana.
The project has officially broken ground, representing a major step forward in Meta’s ongoing expansion of cutting-edge digital infrastructure and one of its most substantial investments to date.
Gigawatt-scale infrastructure to power AI and core services
The state-of-the-art campus will cover roughly four million square feet, delivering 1GW of capacity to power Meta’s core operations and advancements in AI.
As AI technology evolves and demand for high-performance computing accelerates, gigawatt-scale campuses such as this will be essential in enabling next-generation digital infrastructure.
During peak construction, the project is anticipated to support more than 4,000 construction jobs.
Once complete, it will create around 300 operational roles, underscoring Meta’s long-term investment in the Lebanon community and the State of Indiana.
Sustainability commitments and LEED Gold Certification
Meta will cover the full cost of energy, water and wastewater services required by the data centre, ensuring there is no adverse impact on local residents.
In line with Meta’s energy and sustainability commitments, the facility’s entire energy consumption will be matched with clean, renewable sources.
Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the data centre will incorporate a water-efficient, closed-loop liquid cooling system that recirculates water and operates with zero water usage for most of the year.
Community investment and workforce development
The new data centre is engineered for flexibility, capable of supporting both AI workloads and Meta’s core platforms.
Meta is collaborating with local partners to meet key needs across the Boone County community through a range of initiatives – including grant programmes, multi-year donations to promote energy affordability such as a US$1m annual contribution for 20 years to the Boone REMC Community Fund, and financial assistance for emergency water utilities via The Caring Centre.
The company is also directing more than US$120m toward Lebanon’s critical water infrastructure and additional public improvements such as roads, utility upgrades and transmission lines.
In the coming months, Meta’s annual Community Action Grants programme will expand to support Boone County non-profits, schools and local organisations.
Meta is further strengthening local talent pipelines with a new county-wide workforce development initiative through the Boone County Career Collaborative, designed to promote career exploration and work-based learning for students across three school districts.
Reinforcing its water stewardship goals, Meta plans to restore 100% of the water used in Lebanon to regional watersheds.
The company has partnered with Arable to supply advanced irrigation technology expected to save 200 million gallons of water annually for a decade, benefiting independent farmers in Indiana’s Upper Wabash River Basin.
Additionally, Meta is contributing to the revitalisation of the Deer Creek stream to enhance ecological health, increase vegetation and create more resilient habitats for pollinators.
The largest infrastructure investments in Indiana's history
"The scale of the Lebanon Data Centre reflects the growing demand for high-performance infrastructure," adds Ben Kaplan, Managing Director, Turner Construction Company.
"We look forward to working alongside Meta and applying our integrated services and deep mission-critical experience to deliver this data centre safely, sustainably and efficiently while supporting the long-term growth of the Lebanon community."
Once complete, the Lebanon Data Centre will represent one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Indiana’s history, further cementing the state’s position as a growing centre for advanced technology and digital innovation.
