Cristiano Ronaldo’s partnership with Perplexity signals a shift in how AI firms reach mainstream markets, using brand power to challenge others

The artificial intelligence search market is becoming an increasingly competitive space, with new entrants aiming to carve out a share against the long-standing dominance of Google and the conversational prowess of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Into this environment has stepped the AI search platform Perplexity, which has announced a partnership with Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who joins as both an investor and brand ambassador.

Based in San Francisco, Perplexity has an AI-powered search engine that provides direct answers with cited sources. Ronaldo’s involvement is framed around a philosophy that he believes connects his sporting career with the utility of AI tools.

“Curiosity is a requirement for greatness,” he wrote on X.

“You win when you keep asking new questions every day. That’s why I am proud to announce my investment in Perplexity.” This move raises questions about the strategy behind the investment and what it could mean for the future of the global AI market.

Leveraging the CR7 brand for global AI reach

The collaboration provides Perplexity with a direct channel to a vast consumer base across Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, markets where AI startups can face considerable challenges in gaining traction against established search habits and larger competitors.

It is a strategic move designed to bypass the traditional marketing routes often used by technology firms. The CR7 brand, a combination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s initials and his iconic shirt number, supports a commercial empire that extends from fragrances and hotels to a formidable social media presence.

This extensive reach is a key asset for Perplexity. While many AI companies concentrate on enterprise clients or developer communities, the partnership with Ronaldo offers a potential shortcut to mainstream adoption in regions targeted for growth.

The investment suggests a belief that AI search tools are transitioning from being niche products for technical users to everyday utilities for the general consumer.

At the core of the partnership is a platform Perplexity has developed called the Cristiano Ronaldo hub. This interactive archive allows fans to use Perplexity's answer engine to explore the footballer’s career statistics, browse photographs and ask specific questions about matches, awards or personal achievements.

For example, users can make queries such as “How did Ronaldo score against Juventus in 2018?” or “What records does CR7 hold in the Champions League?” The platform processes these questions through its AI to generate contextual responses rather than a simple list of links.

Perplexity has indicated plans to expand the hub over time, incorporating merchandise and curated content that would transform it into a commercial platform within its main service.

Perplexity also states that the relationship goes beyond a simple endorsement, noting that Ronaldo uses the platform for his own purposes, such as preparing for speeches and public announcements.
