How Google and Discovery Partner to Scale AI-Driven Health
AI-driven innovations aimed at transforming human health have taken a major step forward through a new collaboration between Google and Discovery Group, a South Africa-based financial services organisation that operates Vitality Health and Life Insurance.
The partnership has led to the launch of Vitality AI, a new platform delivering highly personalised and context-aware health recommendations to millions of users.
Adrian Gore, founder and Group Chief Executive of Discovery Group, says that although the advantages of preventative care are well understood, global health systems still concentrate largely on treating illness rather than preventing it.
Non-communicable diseases including heart disease, cancer and diabetes are responsible for 75% of global deaths, yet many of these conditions can be prevented through behavioural changes.
“Our partnership with Google transforms this,” he says.
“By bringing together Google’s technology and AI capabilities, and our unique data sets and understanding of behavior change, we will have a never-before-seen capability and understanding of a person’s health, coming together in a way that personalises and empowers millions of people to take control of their health.
“This is transformational, both for the individual and the insurance market as a whole.”
Vitality AI for delivering healthcare at scale
Vitality AI is built on Google Cloud’s advanced AI and data analytics technologies, drawing on platforms such as Vertex AI and Gemini.
Leveraging its extensive health data and deep expertise in behaviour change, the health insurance leader is utilising Google’s AI capabilities to deliver actionable insights tailored to each individual’s unique health history.
Vitality’s de-identified datasets encompass more than 2,800 factors, including lifestyle patterns, behaviours, health information, susceptibility to illness and associated risk indicators.
This extensive reservoir of health data is harnessed by Google’s AI tools to deliver personalised recommendations that guide everyday lifestyle decisions and help prevent avoidable diseases.
Through the Vitality AI platform, potential health risks can be identified and communicated to users in clear, contextual ways, encouraging understanding and motivating positive behaviour change.
"From accelerating the pace of scientific progress, to enhancing early detection of diseases, improving treatment planning, better supporting healthcare professionals and giving more people the right tools and information to live healthier," says Maureen Costello, Vice President, UK, Ireland and Sub-Saharan Africa at Google.
“By integrating Google Cloud's advanced AI capabilities, including Gemini models, with Vitality’s data and understanding on driving healthier habits, this partnership poses an exciting opportunity to deliver hyper-relevant healthcare at scale.”
Vitality AI health impacts
The advantages of Vitality AI are anticipated to be especially impactful for older adults and individuals managing chronic health conditions.
By delivering personalised recommendations, Vitality also has the potential to help reduce hospitalisation costs across the broader population.
Current data indicates that Vitality’s insights have already boosted screening rates by 5.5 times, resulting in a 19% improvement in early cancer detection.
Google-Vitality partnership pillars
The new partnership builds on a decade-long collaboration between the two companies, enabling Vitality to fully leverage the Google Health Connect platform while strengthening its ongoing relationship with Fitbit.
Under this alliance, Google will serve as Vitality’s AI market partner, helping to scale the Vitality AI platform and support its expansion into new, untapped markets.
Additionally, Vitality will establish a dedicated partnership with YouTube Health to develop a wellness-focused content channel featuring educational resources designed to promote better global health outcomes.
Together, these initiatives mark a pivotal shift in healthcare delivery, moving from reactive treatment toward proactive, personalised support that meets individuals where they are.
