How AWS Powers Debenhamsâ AI-Driven Marketplace Growth

Debenhams Group is the powerhouse behind leading fashion and lifestyle brands such as Debenhams, PrettyLittleThing, boohoo, boohooMAN and Karen Millen.
And with such high-profile names under its roof, it is leveraging AI to keep up in the fast-paced world of fashion and kickstart its digital transformation journey.
With the ultimate aim of driving business growth, enhancing customer experience and streamlining operations, Debenhams Group has signed a new multi-year agreement with AWS.
Already a user of AWS cloud services on the Debenhams platform, the group benefits from AWSâ serverless cloud technology, which underpins its successful marketplace model.
This technology facilitates faster onboarding of third-party sellers, expands product selection and ensures a seamless purchasing journey for customers.
The extended partnership with AWS will now enable Debenhams Group to scale AI capabilities rapidly across its brands, supporting the launch of new brands and enhancing operational efficiency.
Enhancing Debenhams with AWS AI
The adoption of advanced AI technologies, including Gen AI, is central to this strategy.
By integrating Gen AI, Debenhams Group aims to deliver personalised product discovery and improve business value through automation and enhanced customer engagement.
One of the standout innovations is the use of AI-generated content powered by Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed service designed to build and scale Gen AI applications.
The technology automates the creation of product descriptions and translations for tens of thousands of products â improving consistency, localisation and speed to market.
The automation process has accelerated product description generation by 20 times and supports automatic translation into six languages, enabling faster international product availability.
As well as this, Debenhams has introduced the Interactive AI Room Styler, developed through the AWS Prototyping investment programme.
This tool allows customers to upload photos, select design styles and receive personalised decor suggestions linked directly to shoppable listings, creating an immersive and tailored shopping experience.
Dan Finley, CEO of Debenhams Group, says: “Collaborating with AWS is a key part of our long-term strategy to transform Debenhams Group into a modern, technology-led retailer.
âWeâve successfully replaced outdated legacy systems with scalable, cloud-first architecture thatâs adaptable, resilient and built to support innovation well into the Groupâs future.
âOur strategic investment in AI and emerging technologies will not only future proof the business, but create a faster, smarter and more personalised experience for our customers.
âWorking closely with a hand-picked team of engineers and AWS specialists, together, weâre not only accelerating our digital road-map, but making Debenhams Group an exciting place to work for the next generation of tech talent.â
Expanding AI across Debenhamsâ brand portfolio
Following a successful initial rollout across Debenhams and its labels, the Group is embedding AWS AI technologies across its other brands.
Boohoo, for example, has recently adopted these AI tools within weeks, demonstrating the scalability and flexibility of the AWS-powered AI infrastructure.
Duncan Stewart, Head of Retail & Consumer Packaged Goods UK & Ireland at AWS, says: “We're delighted to expand our collaboration with Debenhams Group as it continues to accelerate its adoption of AI.
“The team at Debenhams has already achieved impressive results, developing a highly innovative digital commerce platform on AWS that is a strong example in the retail industry.
“By leveraging the flexibility and scalability of the cloud, Debenhams Group now has the technology foundations to quickly build and deploy innovative new AI-powered products and services across all of its brands, which will help drive business productivity and growth.
“We look forward to supporting their continued success.”
