How Google AI Powers Formula E’s Racing Revolution

Google Cloud has been named the Principal Artificial Intelligence Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, marking the start of a new era of AI-driven innovation both on and off the track.
Building on a partnership first announced in January 2025, the renewed collaboration deepens the pair’s commitment to advancing AI in motorsport.
The multi-year agreement aims to showcase how AI can deliver meaningful impact across Formula E’s business operations – from enhancing development and fan engagement to optimising race performance itself.
“Formula E is a hub of innovation, where milliseconds can define success,” says Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA.
“This expanded partnership is a testament to the power of Google Cloud's AI and data analytics, showing how our technology can deliver a competitive advantage in the most demanding scenarios.”
How AI is transforming motorsport
Formula E is set to roll out Google’s Gemini models across its entire ecosystem, accelerating performance, streamlining operations and driving innovation on a global scale.
The collaboration has already delivered standout results – from setting the indoor land speed record to advancing the Mountain Recharge project, where Google’s AI Studio and Gemini models were used to plot the optimal route for the GENBETA car’s mountain descent.
Beginning with just 1% battery, the vehicle successfully generated all the energy needed to complete a full lap of the Monaco circuit through regenerative braking.
Google’s AI-powered tools pinpointed and analysed the exact braking zones required to capture sufficient energy and ensure the car crossed the finish line under its own power.
“Our expanded partnership with Google Cloud is a true game-changer for Formula E and for motorsport as a whole,” says Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E.
“We are already pushing the boundaries of technology in sport and this Principal Partnership confirms our vision.
“The integration of Google Cloud's AI capabilities will unlock a new dimension of real-time performance optimisation and strategic decision-making, both for the championship and for our global broadcast audience.
“This collaboration will redefine how fans experience our races and set a new benchmark for technology integration in sport worldwide.”
Partnership for a greener racetrack and improved fan experience
As the world’s first all-electric FIA World Championship – and the only sport to achieve net-zero carbon status since its inception – the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship stands at the forefront of electric vehicle innovation.
Serving as a premier platform for leading automotive manufacturers to test the limits of EV technology, Formula E’s sustainability goals are further advanced through its partnership with Google Cloud, with AI now helping to enhance agility and energy efficiency across every aspect of the championship’s operations.
Through the use of digital twins for races and events, Formula E can model and optimise site builds virtually, significantly reducing its carbon footprint by limiting the need for on-site reconnaissance and heavy equipment transportation.
Elsewhere, Google’s AI capabilities are enhancing the racing experience for fans, with Formula E already integrating a new Strategy Agent into its live broadcasts.
The AI-powered agent provides real-time insights, predictions and explanations, offering a deeper understanding of race dynamics, driver performance and strategic decisions as the action unfolds – bringing global audiences closer to the excitement on track.
