Wipro has completed a multi-year data centre migration programme for METRO

The technology services and consulting company worked with the international food wholesaler to move legacy IT operations to a multi-cloud ecosystem on Google Cloud.

The new infrastructure aims to support METRO’s long-term growth plans, having moved away from legacy systems as part of its cloud-first strategy and digital transformation agenda.

Cloud transformation at scale

The partnership between Wipro and METRO spans several years across Europe.

They announced their technology deal in December 2020 and signed an extension in June 2025.

Khaled Bagban, Chief Information Officer at METRO, says: “The successful completion of this programme marks a key milestone in METRO’s transformation journey towards a scalable, cloud-based and AI-ready IT landscape.

“Together with Wipro and our partner ecosystem, we have established a resilient and future-ready digital foundation that enables us to accelerate innovation and drive AI adoption at scale.

“This achievement reflects the strength of our collaboration and supports our ambition to become an AI-first company.”

The move eliminates infrastructure constraints that could have limited the organisation. METRO can now access systems that could enable faster innovation cycles.

“Our long-standing partnership with METRO reflects Wipro’s ability to deliver large-scale enterprise transformation with precision, resiliency and measurable impact,” adds Omkar Nishal, Europe CEO at Wipro.

Automating operational processes

The programme included the integration of Wipro Intelligence. According to Wipro, this suite combines AI-powered platforms, solutions and offerings.

The deployment enables intelligent automation across several operational areas. User lifecycle management now includes advanced automation capabilities to manage service requests autonomously.

Turnaround times will also be improved through the new system, as well as accuracy and operational efficiency. According to the companies, the programme applies AI-driven engineering tools to accelerate software development cycles.

Building a digital backbone

METRO’s new digital foundation could enhance digital capabilities, agility and resilience.

Tara Brady, President of Europe, Middle East and Africa at Google Cloud, says:
