OpenAI will integrate Astral’s Python tooling into its Codex agent to help developers accelerate workflows while ensuring reliability and performance

OpenAI is set to acquire Astral, a software start-up responsible for building developer tools for the Python ecosystem – an open-source collection of libraries, frameworks and tools for data science, AI, web development and automation.

Astral has created some of the most widely adopted open-source Python utilities. Solutions like uv – an incredibly fast package installer and resolver – streamline critical dependency and environment management.

Similarly, the Ruff linter and formatter provides fast static analysis, changing how developers approach codebase maintenance.

These offerings, along with ty (part of Astral’s modern tooling suite), have become foundational for developer workflows, contributing to better productivity and defining what modern Python development looks like.

Why is the acquisition happening?

For OpenAI, the value is twofold.

First, it has committed to a “developer-first philosophy” by assuring continued support for Astral’s open-source products post-acquisition.

Second, by integrating Astral’s unique tooling and engineering expertise, OpenAI gains a massive advantage in accelerating its own development of OpenAI Codex.

Codex is an AI-powered coding agent that translates natural language into code.

It is based on models like GPT-5.3-Codex and is used to write, debug, refactor and explain code across integrated development and cloud environments.

However, this acquisition isn’t just about code; it’s about expanding the capabilities and reach of AI throughout the entire software development lifecycle.

Beyond coding

OpenAI is aiming to move beyond AI that generates code and toward systems that can participate in the entire development workflow such as helping to plan changes, modify codebases, run tools, verify results and maintain software.

Integrating Astral’s systems with Codex will enable AI agents to work more directly with the tools developers already use.

Charlie Marsh, Founder and CEO of Astral, says: “Astral has always focused on building tools that transform how developers work with Python – helping them ship better software, faster.

“As part of Codex, we’ll continue evolving our open source tools to push the frontier of software development.”

Overall, the acquisition is designed to help developers move faster while maintaining the reliability and performance their workflows depend on.

Thibault Sottiaux, Codex Lead at OpenAI, says: “Astral’s tools are used by millions of Python developers.

“By bringing their expertise and ecosystem to OpenAI, we’re accelerating our vision for Codex as the agent most capable of working across the entire software developer lifecycle.”

What’s next?

Until the acquisition is closed, OpenAI and Astral will remain separate and independent companies.

After closing, Astral will join the Codex team at OpenAI and explore deeper integrations that allow Codex to interact more directly with the tools developers already use.
