OpenAI Pioneers AI-Powered Financial Advice with ChatGPT Pro

OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT functionality to include financial account integration for Pro users in the US. The feature allows the conversational AI to access bank accounts and provide contextualised financial guidance.
According to Lloyds Banking Group, more than 28 million UK adults used AI for financial guidance toward the end of 2025. This made it the top use case for AI technology in the country.
A study from US Bank found that AI adoption for financial management among Americans grew from 10% to 55% in 2026.
The same research indicated that only 18% of respondents felt comfortable allowing AI to make major financial decisions, highlighting ongoing trust considerations.
Secure account linking for Pro users
ChatGPT Pro users can now securely link financial accounts to the platform.
OpenAI states the feature will allow the company to study real-world use and collect feedback for service improvements.
According to OpenAI, more than 200 million people use ChatGPT monthly for budgeting, investment questions, financial planning and goal setting.
The integration allows ChatGPT 5.5's reasoning capabilities to combine AI intelligence with financial context.
The system can identify spending patterns, analyse tradeoffs and incorporate user information about goals, lifestyle and priorities.
OpenAI clarified that ChatGPT "is not a replacement for professional financial advice" but aims to support users in staying informed about their financial situations.
Intuit will join as a partner to provide additional services. OpenAI gave the example that users could move from receiving a credit card recommendation to understanding approval odds and submitting an application within ChatGPT.
More than 12,000 financial institutions will support the rollout, as the company plans to make the service accessible to its wider user base.
Partnership with Plaid and Intuit
Users can link accounts in minutes by opening the Finances sidebar or using the prompt '@Finances, connect my accounts'. Financial software company Plaid provides the account linking infrastructure.
Zach Perret, Chief Executive Officer of Plaid, says he is "very excited to work with OpenAI to launch Finances in ChatGPT".
He added that "AI is transforming how consumers interact with their finances.
"This is an important step towards bringing sophisticated, personalised financial advice to more people."
The platform could also handle tax implications of stock sales, provide tax estimates and schedule sessions with tax experts powered by Intuit. All functionality would operate inside ChatGPT.
Privacy and security measures
With the new feature, users can share context about their financial situations to refine ChatGPT's advice. This information is saved to influence future responses and create a personalised experience.
OpenAI emphasised that privacy features are built into the service due to the sensitive nature of financial data. ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers or make changes to accounts.
The system can access balances, transactions, investments and liabilities to provide tailored advice. OpenAI included several control options for users.
The ability to disconnect accounts, delete financial memories and use temporary chats that do not permit financial account connections, are among the optional privacy features.
Conversations about financial accounts follow the same model training settings as other ChatGPT interactions.
To add a security layer and prevent unauthorised access, multi-factor authentication can also be enabled. The authentication system operates similarly to banking security protocols.
OpenAI worked with 50 finance professionals across what the company terms "leading institutions" to develop an internal benchmark. The benchmark will grade ChatGPT's performance on challenging personal finance tasks.
