Maaden’s CTO Donovan Waller joins to propel the Saudi mining giant’s digital transformation, embedding AI & automation to align with Vision 2030 ambitions

Saudi mining giant Maaden has appointed Donovan Waller as its new CTO.

Donovan is a seasoned tech executive in the mining industry, having led teams at British multinational company Anglo American.

This move signals a deliberate and aggressive pivot towards embedding technology at the very core of Maaden.

The company says Donovan’s appointment is “a strategic step that reinforces our commitment to innovation and the integration of advanced technologies across our operations”.

Introducing Donovan Waller

Donovan Waller is no stranger to spearheading technological shifts in heavy industry.

Joining Maaden from Anglo American – where he served as Chief Information Officer (CIO) – he was a key architect of the company's acclaimed FutureSmart Mining programme.

This initiative integrates technology and sustainability to create safer, more efficient and less environmentally impactful operations.

Maaden adds: “Donovan brings more than three decades of international experience in industrial technology development, driving competitive advantage at the intersection of business value creation, emerging technology trends and applied R&D.”

Donovan’s experience goes far beyond managing traditional IT infrastructure.

He is a veteran of deploying large-scale operational technology (OT) systems – the digital nervous system that connects everything from autonomous trucks to mineral processing plants.

His background in data analytics, automation and enterprise-wide digital integration — including a stint at PwC – makes him uniquely qualified to lead Maaden's technological charge.

What is Maaden?

Maaden is Saudi Arabia’s leading mining and metals company and the largest multi-commodity mining firm in the Middle East.

Headquartered in Riyadh, it is the cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan to develop the nation’s vast mineral wealth and diversify its economy beyond oil.

The company operates across an extensive portfolio. It is a world leader in the production of phosphate fertilisers and aluminum, managing the entire value chain from bauxite mining to finished rolled products.

Maaden also has large-scale operations in gold and base metals, including copper.

Through significant investment in technology and sustainable practices, the state-backed giant aims to be a leading force in the global resources industry, helping to transform the Kingdom into a major industrial and logistics hub for the world.

What links Donovan to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan?

Donovan’s arrival is expected to accelerate Maaden’s deployment of a sophisticated technology stack, designed to turn raw earth into data-driven value.

In essence, he is not just a CTO for Maaden, but the technological enabler for a national strategic priority.

His success at implementing cutting-edge technology at Maaden is directly tied to the success of Vision 2030's goal to create a world-leading, diversified industrial economy.

Saudi Vision 2030

Maaden is the state’s primary vehicle for developing mining into the “third pillar” of the national economy, a core ambition of the plan.

As someone tasked with deploying the advanced technology – such as AI and automation needed to make the company a globally competitive leader – Donovan’s efforts directly support the Vision's broader goals for economic diversification and digital transformation away from oil.

The tech stack for the mine of the future

Donovan’s arrival as CTO is expected to accelerate the deployment of a sophisticated tech stack, engineering the ‘mine of the future.’

At its core will be an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) network, creating a digital nervous system that connects every vehicle, sensor and processing plant.

This torrent of real-time data will feed the operation’s digital brain in the form of a powerful AI and analytics platform.

This platform will enable the creation of a digital twin – a virtual replica of the entire mine – used for simulating outcomes and driving efficiency.

AI algorithms will constantly analyse data for predictive maintenance, identifying potential equipment failures before they occur to eliminate costly downtime.

They will also optimise every stage of the mineral processing chain for maximum yield.

These digital commands are then executed by the mine’s automated muscle: fleets of autonomous trucks and robotic drills operating 24/7 with unparalleled precision and safety.

This entire ecosystem will be guided by a commitment to sustainability, using technology to minimise water consumption, reduce emissions and boost energy efficiency, ensuring Maaden’s operations align with global ESG standards.

For Maaden and Saudi Arabia, this is more than just an efficiency drive. By building some of the world’s most technologically advanced mines, the company solidifies its position as a reliable and competitive supplier of minerals.

Donovan role as CTO is to be the chief engineer of this transformation.

His success will be measured not in servers managed, but in tonnes moved, efficiencies gained and accidents prevented. His appointment is a clear signal that for Maaden, the future of mining is inextricably linked with the future of technology.
