The global telecommunications industry is on the cusp of change as it prepares for the development of 6G networks.

With the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU-R) recent release of the 6G vision framework, and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) set to begin standardisation efforts in 2025, industry leaders are looking ahead to the potential of this next-generation technology.

Yet unlike previous iterations, 6G is being touted as more than just an upgrade, with experts suggesting it will bring unprecedented value to users.

Recently, Huawei's Wireless CTO,  Dr Wen Tong, unveiled the company’s vision for 6G technology at a the 6G conference in Istanbul.

Huawei is a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices and has been at the forefront of mobile network development for some time.

AI integration: A key to 6G success

Dr. Tong presented the company’s perspective on the next generation of mobile networks at the conference, emphasising the integration of AI and a significant departure from 5G architecture.

At the conference, it was emphasised that 6G is thought to be the next-generation wireless technology poised to revolutionise connectivity by 2030.

This includes the promise of terabyte-per-second speeds, ultra-low latency and enhanced security.

6G's impact is also planned to span global industries, enabling advanced AI, IoT and immersive technologies.

6G is the sixth generation of mobile technology and is expected to be standardised from 2025 and deployed in the 2030s.

Globally, China, South Korea and the US are leading research efforts on 6G, with significant investments in research and development.

The proposed changes that 6G brings could reshape network design, device capabilities and application development across industries.

Huawei is a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices and has been at the forefront of mobile network development for some time.

Dr. Tong emphasised the importance of embracing AI in the development of 6G.

"6G should not be another way to implement 5G,” Dr. Tong highlighted in his speech

“Instead, 6G should embrace the AI revolution with a quantum leap and generate new values for the consumers.”

Dr. Tong also advocates for a shift from the current service-based architecture to an applications-driven network (ADN).

This approach would allow for customised services by dividing the network into isolated sub-networks, each tailored to specific applications.

Global context and future implications of 6G

The push for AI integration in 6G comes as the telecommunications sector undergoes rapid digital transformation worldwide.

The technology is expected to bring numerous benefits to 6G networks, including enhanced network optimisation, personalised services, improved security, and edge computing opportunities.

Dr. Tong calls for “Full AI” in 6G networks, suggesting that this could lead to greater success across the entire mobile industry ecosystem.

"AI will become a key enabler for 6G as the network paradigm shifts," Dr. Tong says.

"Twenty years ago, the Internet was the enabler of technological innovations. Mobile communications embraced the Internet and achieved great business success.
