Microsoft's Investment in Brazil Boosts Tech and Economy
Microsoft, the American multinational technology corporation known for its software products and cloud services, has announced a substantial investment in Brazil.
The company is investing US$2.7bn over three years to enhance its cloud infrastructure and AI in Latin America's largest economy.
This investment comes as countries worldwide compete to establish themselves as leaders in AI and cloud computing technologies that are viewed as essential for economic growth and competitiveness in the 21st century.
Other major technology companies, such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, have also been expanding their presence in Latin America.
For example, in 2022, Google announced plans to invest US$1.2bn in Latin America over five years, with a focus on digital infrastructure and skills training.
Simultaneously, the Brazilian government has been actively promoting the country as a destination for tech investment.
Likewise, In 2021, Brazil launched the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, aiming to position Brazil as a leader in AI development and adoption.
Cloud and AI infrastructure expansion
Microsoft's investment is aimed at enhancing its cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities in Brazil, the report states.
The company plans to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure across several data centres in São Paulo state.
This expansion is expected to increase computing capacity and improve access to cloud services for businesses and organisations throughout Brazil.
The report also reveals that this investment is part of the broader "Microsoft Mais Brasil" programme, which the company announced in 2020 as a demonstration of its long-term commitment to the South American nation.
This programme aims to support Brazil's digital transformation and economic growth through technology investment and skills development.
According to the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), the country's software and IT services market grew by 18.5% in 2022, reaching a value of US$49.5bn.
AI training and economic impact
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Microsoft has committed to providing AI training to approximately 5 million people in Brazil over the next three years, according to the report.
This initiative is designed to address the growing demand for AI skills in the workforce and to ensure that the benefits of AI technology are widely distributed
The report authors say that the massive adoption of AI could potentially add up to 4.2 percentage points to Brazil's economic growth by the end of the decade.
This projection highlights the significant economic impact that AI and related technologies are expected to have on national economies in the coming years.
Additionally, a study by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) found that only 46% of Brazilian companies used cloud computing services in 2021.
This statistic suggests there is substantial room for growth in cloud adoption, which Microsoft's investment could help accelerate.
Microsoft’s global expansion
As well as Brazil, Microsoft has also committed to building digital infrastructure and AI capabilities across the world.
Asia
Investing US$1.7bn over four years to build new cloud and AI data centres in Indonesia, the company is offering AI as an opportunity to improve enterprise skill sets and elevate business innovation.
For example, Microsoft is investing US$2.9bn in Japan to increase the country’s hyperscale cloud computing and AI infrastructure.
The company has also committed to train two million people in India in AI by 2025.
Sweden
In Sweden, Microsoft is investing US$3.2bn to expand cloud and AI infrastructure over two years.
It aims to utilise the country’s supply of green energy, to cement Microsoft’s footprint across the country by adding 20,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) in its three data centres.
Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella says: "We are committed to supporting the AI transformation in Brazil and ensuring it benefits everyone.”
