The manufacturing industry stands on the cusp of a significant transformation, driven by the advent of software-defined manufacturing (SDM).

The concept of SDM builds upon recent advancements in related fields such as software-defined networking, standardised protocols and open-source solutions – paving the way for low-cost edge devices that allow original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to implement SDM strategies effectively.

Now, with SDM promising to revolutionise how factories operate, offering unprecedented levels of flexibility, efficiency and responsiveness to market demands, the manufacturing sector is poised for an evolution.

As traditional manufacturing methods face challenges in adapting to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements, Cisco Systems has unveiled a new suite of software-driven manufacturing solutions aimed at helping manufacturers navigate this transition.

Software-defined manufacturing platform streamlines operations

The company's latest offerings, coupled with a strategic partnership with Rockwell Automation, underscore the growing importance of SDM in the industrial landscape and highlight the potential for transformative change in manufacturing operations.

At the core of Cisco's new offering is a SDM platform designed to simplify network management and enhance operational visibility across factory floors.

The platform leverages Cisco's expertise in networking to create a unified infrastructure that can integrate various industrial systems and devices.

It also incorporates advanced analytics capabilities, enabling manufacturers to gain real-time insights into their operations – and by analysing data from connected devices and systems, companies can identify bottlenecks, predict maintenance needs and optimise resource allocation.

The role of Cisco's connected machines

Cisco's connected machines for digital manufacturing solution is a key component of this platform as it provides a connected architecture that redefines secure, efficient and visible operations.

Cisco’s key announcements:
  • A new suite of software-driven manufacturing solutions to modernise industrial operations
  • Partnering with Rockwell Automation to enhance industrial connectivity and cybersecurity for manufacturers
  • A new training and certification programme to address the skills gap in industrial networking

This solution enables rapid, standards-based, repeatable machine connectivity and global factory integration while enabling OEM digitisation and new business models - including highly secure remote access, monitoring and serviceability of machines.

Rockwell Automation partnership enhances industrial cybersecurity

Cisco's collaboration with Rockwell Automation focuses on addressing the growing cybersecurity concerns in the manufacturing sector.

The partnership will integrate Cisco's network security solutions with Rockwell's industrial control systems to create a comprehensive security framework for operational technology (OT) environments.

The joint offering also includes advanced threat detection and response capabilities tailored for industrial settings and also provides manufacturers with tools to segment their networks, isolating critical systems from potential security breaches.

President of Cisco India & SAARC, Daisy Chittilapilly

“We are excited to partner with Rockwell Automation to build a future-ready, skilled workforce that can bring to life new possibilities of digital technologies, paving the way for a smarter and globally competitive manufacturing landscape”, Daisy Chittilapilly, President of Cisco India & SAARC, says.

Addressing the skills gap in industrial networking

Recognising the challenges many manufacturers face in finding skilled personnel to manage complex industrial networks, Cisco has also announced a new training and certification programme.

The programme aims to equip IT and OT professionals with the skills needed to deploy and maintain software-defined manufacturing networks.

The certification programme covers topics such as industrial network design, cybersecurity for OT environments, and the implementation of Cisco's software-defined manufacturing platform.

It is also designed to complement existing industrial certifications offered by Rockwell Automation and other industry partners.

“As we navigate the digital-first era, we’re witnessing a significant shift where industries without the right skilled talent risk falling behind,” Daisy says.

“This transformation, driven by AI and emerging technologies, is especially critical for the manufacturing sector.”
